I'm not talking about your typical bad moods, or moments of grievance.

If you have experienced it before you already know its long term, NOT temporary like your run-of-the-mills bad days. When you're depressed you feel irritable, you can't concentrate, you feel tired all the time, and you have a general lack of interest in everything. But I guess the most defining trait of depression is it's feeling of being in an altered state of mind. Everything feels muted, and you put yourself down a lot. Just a general recurring sense of hopelessness & despair.

I?m in college now, but I've noticed MOST of my friends through senior year of High School till now has shown or admitted to suffering from depression before. It's a scary part of growing up. I just hate how common it is. I wonder if it's just me & my group of friends or is depression really that common?

One of my friends already admited to planning on killing himself. I just don't know how to go about handling the situation.

I've had bad depression. Suicidal thoughts, lack of hunger, sleeping for more that 20 hours a day, crying, yep, I've had a bunch of the symptoms.

I went to a psychologist when I was 13. I just lied to him.

I'm better now, it'll take a while. Self-esteem seems to be my biggest problem now. That and home-sickness.

Real depression sucks, when you look at an approaching train and think 'One step forward and the pain stops...'

For real. I've thought out so many options for painless suicide.

People throw the words "I'm going to kill myself" or "I'd kill myself if x" around like they're nothing.

Fortunately I was too much of a coward to act on it.

I'm not sure if what I've experience could be described as full blown depression...probably somewhere in between. More than a bad day, less than clinical depression.

Eventually you snap out of it.

It's not. But meeting new people doesn't really help much. I mean they're just people. They can just as easily betray you as the next friend. Come on you gotta think like a depressed person!:p

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to put down your opinon. You're right, that could be one way to cope.

go out and met new ppl. stop feeling sorry for urself.

If only it was that easy my friend.

and at the same time, it's really not that hard.

A real depression goes far beyond simply feeling sorry for yourself. Unless you have experienced it yourself you will not be able to truly grasp how bad it can be, how deep real despair can go. I know people with perfect lives (and more social skills than most people here will ever have) who have tried to end it cause of depression. Don't take it lightly, it can be quite a deadly illness.

I'm not sure if I have or have not. Don't know how much is considered depression and how much is normal. I thought nearly everyone has had suicidal thoughts.

I don't know about that, but when you have them often, you have a problem.

I guess the defining factor would be if they were just momentarily thoughts of suicide or recurring thoughts of suicide. That's what separates the really depressed people.

I've suffered before... then I got a job, found Jesus, got a girlfriend, etc... now I'm single, agnostic, and essentially jobless (unless you count being an RA a job)... but I'm not depressed anymore. Go figure.

Indeed, depression is not just feeling down. That's the whole problem with it.

Have you ever suffered from depression before?
Hmm, it depends on what you call depression. For nearly six consecutive months, I...

- rarely ventured out of my apartment except for necessity
- would not answer the door
- would not answer the telephone
- would not talk to anyone coming or going from my apartment
- was extremely hostile to family and friends when they tried to confront me
- didn't shower for several days at a time
- didn't brush my teeth but once every few days
- didn't shave for weeks at a time
- rarely cleaned my apartment or picked-up after myself
- didn't really give a damn if the world came to an end or not
- wouldn't do laundry unless I had worn everything three times or more
- lost or gained between 10 and 15lbs, fluctuating every month
- wouldn't even get my mail on a regular basis so the Post Office STOPPED DELIVERING IT

I think I survived for six months on Mountain Dew, Ramen noodles, and cigarettes.

So if that's not depression, buddy there is no such thing as depression!

I supposed I have had depression for the last couple of years. The only thing that has stopped me from going to the next world is that I have had no balls to do it .:(

That could also be an ATOT/BF1942/UT2003 addiction ;)
