disregard... i got a server busy message so re-sent my post 6 times... sorry...please respond to the original post

AB: I'm sure that's not the proper way to attain "Senior Member" status 🙂

I did, however, want to "second" (seventh, eigth?) your request. I'm very tempted to make the upgrade myself, but it would be great to hear from someone who's done it before. My primary concerns are

1) losing video performance
2) losing DVD-playing capability
3) losing trackpad/nubbin functionality
(I've become addicted to using the side of the trackpad for scrolling)
4)l osing modem/ethernet capabilities

(I'm worried about driver-quality in all four cases)
Thanks!
RC

I just installed win 2k pro on my i4000 notebook. Used partition magic and created a drive d. So now I can duel boot between win 2k and win me. Win 2k is so much better. DVD playback is flawless and I d/led all the latest win 2k drivers from there website. Everything works great. I might eventually just nuke win me of C: 🙂

I was told that WIN2K will be shipped to me. Do I assume that is the Professional version? Does Dell ship any other version or is there any other version of WIN2K?

Yes you will get Professional. They also have Win 2K server, advanced server, and datacenter.

I just spoke to Dell regarding the details of the rebate. I had mistakenly been charged for an extra Xircom Ethernet Card and 2 extra color choices. I called back and they said that amount would be credited back and this would not affect the rebate. I even spoke with a supervisor who gave me her badge number, as she was certain that this change would not affect the rebate. I went ahead with the refund back to my card, thinking that if there was an issue 6 weeks down the line, I could raise hell and bring up the supervisor's name. Should I worry? What should I believe? I have received an initial confirmation that I had qualified for the rebate but I am still waiting on an exact dollar amount.

I just got my Win2k upgrade from Dell. For anyone else who has gotten their's, did yours come with a certificate of authenticity, and if not, am I going to need the product key during setup? Just curious.

Yep you should have received a sticker in a little plastic bag.

Win2K Pro is rock solid now on the 4000's. How did Dell validate Win Me on these notebooks when the OS crashed so much??? They must have used blind monkeys. Or else the marketing guys forced it through.

I believe the latter is the more likely... marketing / sales owns Dell and almost every other tech company nowdays.

mragrimm: I got a new HD, and on it was Win2K and most of the drivers. I didn't have to enter any information. The Product Key was filled in when the screen came up (it was different from the one they sent me) and the customer name/company was filled in too. Both of those were Preferred Customer/Dell Corporation. Unfortunately, I had to go into the registry to change that. The other choice I had was to use their CD, but that would've meant another hour+. I also had to install some drivers and all of the software I wanted. It was convienent only because I could only install what I wanted on there. It was certainly not the take one drive out and put the other one in and you're set that I was led to believe it would be. But I got a 10 GB upgrade for free, so I won't complain...too much. 🙂

They sent me a 20 GB HD with Win 2K on it instead of a 10 GB, which is what I had. I told a tech and he said keep it. I wasn't going to argue with him. 🙂

Dell is tha bomb....and their customer care is too...they r sending a guy out to fix my computer free of charge...thats sooo great hahahaahah

Wednesday is D-Day for me. 30 days from my invoice date. I've already been on the phone for countless hours and supposedly, they're sending me Win 2K on disk, I get to keep my 10 GB hard drive and one hundred dollars off. So far, all that has materialized is that they sent me Win 98SE instead of Win 2K, supposedly by mistake and they had a 3-5 day window for sending me Win 2K, it didn't happen.
When I asked where my credit for $100 was, I was told by a badge-bearing individual (hired 2nd party CSR) that until the 30 day period expired they wouldn't show the credit. Should I believe these jokers?
The real CSR has not returned phone calls. I've stayed home for Airborne Express to arrive two days. I'm miffed!
With regard to their mishandling of MSN rebate confirmations alone is reason to expect something for a bunch! This ain't chump change for me and their various CSR's have treated me as such via telephone and email. In fact the only thing concrete is the snail mail invoice and a wobbly laptop that I could pick up at Best Buy for the same price, if not better. So, for all you "better than thou, my morals are correct" people ...get off of the thread -you don't belong here. You don't know what you're talking about or what "We" are dealing with ...this is compensation for our hard-earned money and not flagrant petulence.

RVN

Dont forget to call DELL and complain and threaten to return the laptop if some form of compensation (credtis or merchandise).

My order before rebate is around $2600 and i got a FREE 8X cdrw (value $300) or a $300 credti back.

DOnt forget you have to do this within 30 days.

I know I've said it before as well as many others in this thread but here it is again.

If you are not satisfied with a product return and get another or get a different brand. If you get money, parts, etc. for compensation then live with it.

As for this comment: "better than thou, my morals are correct" people ...get off of the thread -you don't belong here. You don't know what you're talking about or what "We" are dealing with ...this is compensation for our hard-earned money and not flagrant petulence."

I guess everyone else should just leave the thread to the people who have no morals at all and who just want to continue to screw companies out of money and goods. Compensation for hard earned money, HA! If you aren't satisfied return the product. Do it before your 30 days is up and go get a different system.

I thought the purpose of this forum was for HOT DEALS. Not how to screw and scam companies.

Come and bring the flames. The Elvi have left the building.

Some of you may remember my post earlier about helping a client buy this laptop. Well, I worked on it extensively on Sunday (Jan 7) and I have to say I am very disappointed. Because time is money, we opted for Windows 2000 to save on the inconvenience of calling Dell and asking for a free upgrade.

As soon as I set up the name and license key information, I proceeded to install his "bought less than 5 minutes ago" Sandisk Imagemate USB device. I plugged it in and it detected it and was just about to ask for drivers when...

BOOM - Blue screen; IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL in ntoskrnl.exe.

What an error message. I tried some other things (like installing the drivers first, etc) but nothing worked. Finally I decided to call Technical support and they gave me no assistance whatsoever. I reinstalled Windows 2000 from scratch, it still crashed, so I had to buy WinME and put that on. How ironic, eh? I wanted Win2000 for stability and ended up sticking with ME anyway.

Lore--

Hmm... that is strange. Was it a CF or SM card reader? Because I've got an I8000 with Win2k and I hooked my Sandisk CF reader to it without any problems whatsoever.

Sorry to hear you're having a rough go of it. Did you try calling up Sandisk? Seeing as it's their hardware that's causing the problem, maybe they know and/or have a fix? You could also try the Microsoft Knowledge Base, as that can be handy in diagnosing these kinds of problems as well.

I know all of this is kind of moot anyway, seeing as you installed WinME (ugh...), but you should have installed the Win2k Service Pack 1 (although this might have come preinstalled). It would have been worth a shot anyway.

luv2chill: It's a CompactFlash reader from Sandisk. Brand new, too. The client bought it from Fry's no more than 5 minutes before I arrived to work on the computer. I didn't bother with the Microsoft Knowledge base or Sandisk (it was a Sunday).

Well, no biggie, his ME is working now. Pain in the ass, though. Do you have a CF or SM reader?
