LCD is crapo for games.

lots of jerking and tearing when there is lots of motion.

only one native resolution, scaled resolutions look poor.

For the office, I would love an LCD, but if you play games at all, I would pass.

Besides, for what a "decent" 17" LCD costs you can get a top of the line 21" CRT.

If price wasn't an issue, I would go with the LCD since the 'ghosting' effect has been supposedly resolved in the newer models. Plus, it's much easier on the eyes for long usage and takes up very little desktop space.

LCD's are damn nice... but IMHO their still not ready for prime time. For just basic 2D work they look fantastic but if you getting into some games or anything in which the scene will be constantly changing quickly then you best off avoiding today's LCD's and sticking with a CRT monitor for now.
Even high end LCD's still seem to exhibit some of the infamous "ghosting" effects in my experience. And even cheap LCD's are still pretty pricey let alone a real high end model.

I'm actively searching for a monitor too for my new system, and was considering a small LCD panel. But decided against it, because of the fixed resolution (ususally only 1024x768) of them. Say you have a 2D game that only runs in 800x600. It won't fill the whole screen, unless you use the zoom feature of the LCD. Can make stuff grainy looking.

Are there any non-gamers out there? :) Who am I kidding, if we're browsing these forums, it's unlikely that we don't play games.

But anyway, I suppose if you do everything else, aside from games, would you choose LCD instead?

I agree that the technology is not ready for prime time, but hey, it's the cool factor, and "cool" usually translates into "extra $$$" throw in (or thrown away).

I vote for LCDs for about 95% of all work/gaming needs. If you are a hardcore FPS player then stay with a CRT. However, except for some extreme cases the majority of FPS playing I do does not result in ghosting. I bought very high end monitors and only use DVI for gaming. If you are in a heavy firefight in Q3 or UT then you will notice the delay timing at certain points during the game. I play for recreation so it does not bother me. :)

I agree 100% with what Bingo13 said. I just bought a Samsung 170T LCD, and it uses all the latest LCD technology. So far I have noticed zero ghosting, and very limited motion artifacts playing Tribes 2, Black and White lately. Even when I use the scaling feature to fill the screen in non-native resolutions, I noticed a slight picture quality difference, but it was far from unuseable, or horrible looking. Currently I'm using the analog connection, can't wait for my replacement cable to arrive from Samsung so I can try out the DVI connection.
