Poll: Credit card declined

I was at a Wawa, trying to buy a hoagie and use my paypal debit card to pay for it. I have a balance over a grand b/c of my latest xbox360 sale and my lunch can go on the buisness account

So the clerk looks up at me and says "Sir, the computer says that you are delinquent on your account. Do you have another way to pay?" The whole store looked at me... I dug some cash out of my pocket, got back to the office and called paypal. Apparantly "the card processor was down and they are sorry for the inconvienience. Your account is in good standing." WTF.... does this kind of thing happen often? If my main CC was suddenly unavailable, I think I'd blow my stack on the spot!

Anyone else ever had a CC declined even though it was in good order?

Talk about needless embarrasment... if that happened to me at a restaraunt I think I'd have gone ballistic!

Declined overseas once. Retarded. Next day I tried again and it worked. In fact they let me go over my limit by $4 and when I returned I saw BoA charge me a fatass fee.

Had a $200 dinner that I was buying for another couple and my wife and I come back declined on a card with a $16,000 limit. So embarrassing. Used my wifes card instead but couldnt reiterate enough to anyone who would listen that the card is fine and has way more limit then the dinner cost. Never got a reason why it was declined.

Yeah, I've been declined twice. Once was on a date, and the CC processor was down. The second was when I was buying some golf clubs, and my card was declined, because it was not a typical transaction for me, so they flagged it as suspicious activity.

I wait tables and credit cards get declined a lot more than you would think. I think its more embarassing for the server to tell the person they need a different form of payment because their credit card did not work.

I cringe knowing that I have to go back to my table and tell them their credit card will not work.

Did you call the CC company? I think I'd have exploded.

I frequently have problems with one card for some reason. Whatever, all balances always paid on time, next card. BFD.

Did you get it waived? After being declined for no reason, I'd think you'd have a great case to get that fee waived. Again, I think I'd have had a conniption!

Never had a card declined. And when I was a waiter, never had a customer's card declined. Guess I'm lucky.

Was declined in Mexico for a 7k deposit on a rental car, but other than that I've only been declined when using a one-time issue MBNA number to send a payment to Russia. Never was declined in Europe, either.

Yeah, they froze my account like a day after the purchases. My wife found out when she tried to use it.

Neither of my cards have ever been declined for me. I've never had any problems with them.

I work in the mall at a little game shop. It's quite embarassing to have to tell someone that they can't buy a $20 game because their card wouldn't work.

I once had a pair of young black women come into my store about 20 mintues til closing, and they stacked up about $120 worth of games on the counter, and wrote a check for it. Well, we use a check authorization thing, kind of like a credit card, before we take the check. It didn't approve it, they were like "Well, can't you call the company and have them approve it?" So I got on the phone, and sat on hold with their stack of games for 5 minutes and they just said "screw it" and left. I'm not sure if they were trying to pull a scam or float checks or what. I felt bad though.

No, but the cardholder is free to use our phones to clear up any issue with the credit card company.

Working with CC's daily, I can tell you that debit style cards get false declines VERY often. Has something to do with the way the bank's network handles the transaction.

Didnt even think of it. Just used a different card and never went back to that restaurant again. I am sure it wasnt there fault but they arent in business anymore so I cant go back if I wanted to.

I think the only time I had my card declined was an online purchase where I typed in the number incorrectly.

A lot of banks have a low "cash" limit, which means if you use your PIN, you are limited to $250 - $500 per 24 hours. Yes, per 24 hours, not per day or per transaction. However, if you use it as a Credit transaction, your balance is typically your limit.
