Cats are also social animals, mine love me to death. One in particular, if I am upset about something, she is right there. Comforting me.

Really, the love you give an animal, cat, dog, hamster, horse, they give back 10 fold. Unconditional love. It's the love you give, and get from them, that matters to me, it's a matter of taste. This debate will always go on, and it's old hat.


 
dogs, cats are unappreciative, deceitful little creatures. oh and they're fat and ugly as hell when they're fully grown

and yes, i've had a cat before. he was an asshole.
 
I voted dogs, but I have one of each. I admit a preference for the dog ... so much fun to have around, while the cat, although not too bad, is really only useful when sleeping on my stomach while I watch movies or read. The god (now was that really a typo?), I mean dog, always is ready for a walk, run or bike.
 
cats are users...they don't relly care for anyone except themselves. i do enjoy my cat keeping me warm at night though. 🙂

edit:actually that's not completely true, my cat does empathize with me at times.

yea, cuz people let the cats just roam around. and the stats are something like 100 million birds are killed by cats each year..and u know how they do it...kill/play/torture ... so getting run over... its just karma sometimes😉

If someone is breaking into your house while you are there, would you rather have your dog standing bravely by your side, or "Mittens"???
 
Cats kick ass. They actually have a backbone and aren't little whimpering doormats. They are also a heck of a lot stonger pound for pound than dogs are, built from the ground up to kill small furry things. That's why cats the size of St. Bernards don't generally live with people (aside from Sigfried and Roy).

They can even be quite sweet once they get used to you. One of mine lays on the bed right next to my wife at night and even plays fetch with little plastic bottlecaps. Aloof, she ain't. My other cat is a complete arsehole, though, but even he can be kind of nice for about an hour or so a day.

That not quite fair to the cats, since all the cats that can safely live with human are not much larger than poodle size. If you could safely keep a panther for a pet without special training, I'm sure they would make just as good a deterrent to thieves as a large dog. Probably better.

 
Cats, hands down.

I'll take a pet that can clean itself, and bury it's own waste over one that cannot anyday.

Who's smarter, the one that mindlessly does everything you tell it to do, or the one that CAN do it, but looks at you in a way that says, "fsck no, I don't WANT to!"
