That's not what spidey07 is saying. Imagine you're entering hot in the wrong gear and need to drop one gear. Braking, regular downshift, clutch out dragging the engine up from idle speed, compression lurch, ass end swings out, hello tree!

edit: and power is no excuse for not doing it right :)

don't bother double-clutching, but you should revmatch. It's just a question of hitting the gas a bit before letting out the clutch in the lower gear.

Big feet (size 15) + pedals which are kinda close together = tough chore

Im 17 years old and have been driving a Manual Transmission for 2 years now.

I can shift downshift and everything just fine.

IIRC isn't double clutching bad for the car?

I can double clutch (Im in a '92 Toyota 4x4) but not nearly as fast as the car is a long stick and the clutch has a huge dead zone. Double clutching in the truck i frequently get caught outside the gears, and have to take the time match RPM's again, however when i do it right it still takes about 4 secs. Then again, truck isn't meant for any of that.

I'm just learning stick, although it's pretty smooth all around now..and I don't double-clutch/rev match..when downshifting into a corner I just let the clutch out slowly..i'm not that advanced yet
Well if your in know hurry that is perfectly fine. However if you want to maintain speed but have a bit more power you rev-match so you dont lose any Speed or Rotations, however your RPM jumps.

I have never tried Heel-Toe. IIRC though isn't that more a street racing term. When you take a corner real fast you have your heel on the brake yet your toe on the gas so you maintain RPMs as you downshift for power. Probably wont try it as i am in a truck so taking corners real fast... probably not a good idea.

Its more of a feel kinda think - ding, fing, blip, bam.

Yes, i can double clutch and heel-toe. Took like 3 weeks to figure it out for me.

However i am in a long stick. Shifting really fast regular (granny shifting per se) even takes longer. There seems to be a lot of resistance in my car going into 2nd gear.

My friends answered this a while back for me, but why can you not just leave the clutch in and rev the engine to the desired rotation?

Ill have to practice a bit more, i can downshift seemlessly with the clutch in without going to neutral.

Part of the problem may be that this isn't my cars original transmission. My Unlce (before he died :( ) had the transmission replaced at ~85,000 ; the car is now at 93,000.

I can't heel-toe because my pedals are in a position that makes it near impossible.

I can double clutch and synchro shift though.

That's revmatching, and in cars with working synchros is all you need to do.

That's what I do. Clutch-in, rev, clutch out.

What kind of asinine comment was that?

My car is balanced pretty well and the tires are fine, Bridgestone Potenzas.

If I take the corner hard, the steer is neutral, with maybe a touch of understeer. If I give it some power then it will develop oversteer. You can control it somewhat, although controlling power on a turbo car isn't as exact as controlling it on a NA car... the boost comes on a bit hard and gives power too quick.

They are not light in the rear end, I don't know who told you that. I've driven a Camaro before, so I know what that feels like. My Z feels firmly planted.

Believe me, I've driven manual transmission cars for years and rarely if ever double clutched any of them.

BTW-I've even driven a car without a clutch. My first car was a SAAB 99 and it could be started in gear. I was out at my local mall one day and pressed in the clutch only to find that the clutch cable snapped. I was able to drive the car home by starting it in gear for the times I absolutely had to stop and shifted it by rev matching between gears.

When I downshift I just rev match and let the clutch out.
Well... you have an STi. It has a god-like transmission and enough torque and low gearing to start off in 2nd easily. Regular WRX's are not the same. Not by a long shot. Fsckin' only reason I wish I had waited for an STi would be to have that tranny. There's a 99.9% chance that I will be buying an STi early next year, right now I'm just waiting to see if Subaru actually does a re-design or not. WRX tranny is a POS. Shifting into 1st while moving without double-clutch rev-match is more or less impossible, and unfortunately you have to do it pretty often in traffic because 2nd is poorly geared (too long).



It's been confirmed, the base WRX will be getting a 2.5L Engine upgrade

It isn't getting the 6 speed transmission in the STi though.

Left foot braking is for Formula One drivers who don't have an actual clutch pedal to deal with. I honestly have no idea how you could left foot brake and downshift in a regular car.

Although, I do left foot brake all the time in GT4!

Yeah, just regular downshift with a blip throttle rev-match in the middle is a heel-and-toe.

LOL.

Left foot braking should not be done on the street. It's only done for weight balancing while racing.

Hell no! I have the Logitech Driving Force Pro wheel. I bought a seat and fabricated a frame to mount the wheel on. It isn't pretty but it wasn't overly expensive and it is just like sitting in and driving a car.
