My computers do naughty things sometimes but all I usually gotta do is wave the red handled money maker at em and they behave themselves, hahaha as much money as that screwdriver has made for me it oughta be called a magic wand :D

Since the mind has not been demonstrated to be algorithmic in any sense, I would say no. Of course if it were ever shown to be, then it might be possible

I thought that our minds were shown to be like neural nets abeit extremely complex ones
it may have just been a theory

If our computers develop a conscience, then they will also develop depression, alcoholism, megomania, intolerance, bias, compassion, charity, anger, and love. Then we are in deep trouble.

We're already in deep trouble, on the other hand there will be "people" who would be able to objectivly view a situation and make a reasonable decision and this country would be a much better place that way. Less votes because people "like" a candadate more than the other, less going to war with Iraq, and the Bushes would finally be out of the White House for good.

Well if you break it down, your conscience is merely a set of rules by which you gauge right vs. wrong.
Theoretically, you could "program" a very very rudimentary conscience like so:
- Assign list of rules
- Assign point values / "importance" to each rule
- When presented with a choice, verify that what rules might be broken and assess point value vs. no action or alternate action.

For example, a situation I was just in - I had to tell a small lie for a friend to protect another friend.
Lying (-5 points)
Protecting friend's best interest (+10 points)
Net: +5 points.
Carry on.

Yes, I'm aware that it gets MUCH MUCH more complicated but that's an ultra basic way of breaking it down into something simple that could be dealt with by artificial intelligence. I seriously doubt that we'll ever get machines to the level of human or even semi-human consciousness in our lifetimes.

Let's elaborate on the example you gave, shall we?

Lying to Friend A (-5 points)
Protecting Friend B's best interests (+10 points)
Friend A finds out later from Friend C that you lied, then confronts Friend B (-5 points)
Friend B thinks that you told Friend A the truth (-5 points)
Realizing that you should have stayed out of it the whole time (-20 points)
Net: -25 points

That sounds like you've got a personal problem.

It's because your using Girfriend 2.0a which has conflicts with Wife 1.4. Any removal of Wife 1.4 will create invalid page faults in Girfriend 2.0a. You could upgrade to Girlfriend 3.0 which has a patch, but it will cost you alot of $$ to pay for programmers' R&D for the deletion of Wife 1.4.

My computer doesn't have a conscience. It has a temperment though, it works when it feels like it.
