broomball is really fun. but last time i played they didn't zamboni the middle so you couldn't slide all over.

I used to work at an Ice Rink, they would purposefully not clean the ice before a broomball game. Too many people would slip and fall otherwise.

way more fun that way. maybe i don't need pristine ice, but this still was decidedly non-slideable.

I played quite a bit of broomball in highschool during the seventies. Even had my broomball sneakers with the suction holes in the sole. Of course, I played goalie most often but I was good at goaltending (was a goaltender in gouret de salon (floor hockey, like ringuette) also. Problem is... that frozen ball hits you in the face, it smarts!

Played it like 7 times in college and another two times in high school. Just played actually a few weeks ago. I've gotten smarter. Butt pads do help! (they're from when I was learning how to snowboard)

Pads like hockey or football pads were not allowed in our leagues, aside from a helmet, and what dennilfloss mentioned. A helmet (with cage or facemask) is honestly just as much needed as a cup, a frozen broomball (hard as a rock) at full shot speed could do serious damage if it hit you in the face. Not to mention the risk of an errant stick or something, and the liability issues.

Broomball is fun especially when you are playing with people who have no hockey experience. Ice hockey would be more fun. Since I'm in Texas, I stick to inline hockey. Ice hockey can get expensive.

We played broomball in highschool (not on ice though).

More than anything else, I think it was an excuse for the gym teachers to laugh at the students slamming the absolute shit out of each other.

tell me about it. new helmet (using same old cage), 2 new wooden sticks (never tried a composite, probably never will) and new socks.... plus a sharpening job... $150+

Broomball is great, but it should never be played seriously. It's something you do at 2am when the bars around the base lodge close and you've got enough alcohol in your blood that you don't freeze.

As teenagers, we played at 0F with no alcohol in our blood. We kept running though. Below -20F, the ice started to have a lot more friction and the vinyl/rubber ball would become rock hard. We still played though (there was no internet back then).

Of course, that describes "formal" Broomball.

From that Wiki link:
Many male players wear a cup (or jockstrap), also a few women have been known to wear a "Jill", a feminine version of a cup. It is sometimes colloquially known as a box.

ROFLES!

Edit: Air holes? Air holes?! For a woman's sweaty genitals? Are corks an additional purchase?
