Poll: Broomball

The first time I ever heard of Broomball was when I saw it in the cinematographic classic, Hot Dog... The Movie. The first time I payed was in college (with about 100 people on the ice!).

I played once last year and I am going to be playing again this Saturday. However, when I mention it to some people, they have never, ever, even heard of Broomball.

Have you heard of it?

Have you played? Do you have any good Broomball stories?

broomball is really fun. but last time i played they didn't zamboni the middle so you couldn't slide all over.

i played in highschool a bit, in phys-ed class. we also played ringette, which was more fun IMO. any variation of hockey will do for me but i prefer ice hockey.

I used to work at an Ice Rink, they would purposefully not clean the ice before a broomball game. Too many people would slip and fall otherwise.

Why not just play hockey?

don't need gear, more people can be on the ice.

I only played it for fun at social gatherings - I don't know if it would really make a good competitive sport since i've never tried playing it that way.

I have heard of it, I have played it, and I've never seen this movie. I reinforced my broom with pencils and duct tape, worked pretty well. Got a little too competitive when we played a game with couples tied together. My poor girlfriend got dragged a bit. 😱 Oh well, she still married me.

Edit: We played with actual brooms

... yea, not a lot of that happening in NY... is this like a ghetto version of hockey? Like stickball is to soft/baseball?

Not sure what you mean by not a lot of that in NY. Each of the colleges my son visited, that all have their own hockey rinks, all have broomball leagues. At one of the schools, an incredibly high percentage of the kids are involved in broomball leagues (well over half of the students.) IIRC, their league matches are scheduled as late as 2am to get in all the teams.

Broomball is an enormously popular intramural sport where I went to school (Michigan Tech). The style there is a less-than-official version played with homemade brooms. There's enough participation that there are four leagues, one for each residence hall, and one for off-campus students.

Best stories...
There was the time when my broom cracked while playing, so I snapped it over my knee and tossed it out of the rink and grabbed a teammate's...
Also the time I got a bloody nose from a hard hit, staunched it with snow outside the rink and returned to play with a bloody jersey (it's still stained to this day).
Our hall also pulled out a barbecue a few times and cooked brats and hot dogs while we stood in the cold, cheering on our teams.

Living where it's winter for most of the year makes you do strange things. 😛
