A couple weeks ago, I was approached by a student who said, "I'm a senior graduating this December, and I know I haven't been doing well, but I promise to hand in the remainder of the assignments we have due." I was glad she came to me and said, "Okay, turn in everything else and I'll do as much as I can to make sure you graduate."

Naturally, she doesn't hand in half the stuff and now she's some 3% below what she needs to pass, and thus graduate. As teachers, we're allowed to push up some students with extremely really low grades up to a maximum of 5%, on the condition that they have shown some sort of improvement/effort.

I'm not going to let a poll on AT decide her fate, as I've already decided she's getting pushed up to the D- she needs to graduate, but I'm curious as to what you guys would have done. I feel guilty enough about it, but would hate to see her get held back because of a class she's probably never going to use anyway.

Cliff Notes Version:
* College senior failing core class.
* Needs 3% to graduate, but hasn't shown as much effort as she could have.
* Teachers allowed to push up grades 5%, pending student's attitude
* What would Jebus/you do?
 
i'd see how her life has been during the term. If her father died and mother was committed, I'd give more leeway than if she partied every weekend for 12 weeks.
 
If she doesn't care enough now, she never will. She'll eventually get her comeuppance, though. I don't know that's I'd keep someone from graduating for 3%. If she hadn't done ANYTHING, then I'd say, yeah, fvck her, but as you've outlined it, I'd just say fvck it and pass her.
 
If this were a high school class I'd probably say give her the 3% and then let her learn the truth out in the real world rather than setting her back so much by repeating her senior year. But in college? She has to learn personal responsibility. She has to get a job and then she WILL turn in her 'work' on time or she's outta the job. Giving this 3% to her will only hurt her. Just my opinion..

Oh. Then jesus, pass her. Wonder how much MS paid to get that class introduced. And seriously, if you can't figure out Office on your own, then ain't nothing in the world gonna make you a success, certainly not taking the class over again.
 
I'd pass her.

She was 'honest' with it all. She didn't make up a BS story about it or anything. She admitted it and went to you.

She will get what is coming to her when she is out in the real world if she is like this anyway.

I would say the opposite, if anything. A college senior isn't going to gain anything by failing that class, much less learn "personal responsibility". Sheesh.

College students have enough to deal with (on top of PAYING tuition). Any teacher that uptight about 3% isn't helping anyone. Grades != amount learned

She's wasting space and taxpayer subsidy money staying in college, flunking her might get her to take the class again but it probably won't change her attitude or (lack of) interest in learning.

I don't see much benefit to letting her stay, especially since many colleges are turning away real students right now because they're over-enrolled. Get her out of school and let her find out what D- work will earn her in the real world.
