Poll: Best War Movie Ever?

GasX

Lifer
By whatever criteria you use to judge war films, what do think is the greatest war movie ever made?

I am sure I have missed a few titles, feel free to post those I have missed. I will either add them to the poll or add them to my wish list.

I missed the obvious ones only because I was setting up the poll. I added Russ' suggestions too. I think we have enough choices now 😉

Curiously, no movie has 2 votes yet...

some of those movies were about some aspect of war and are not
straight 'war movies', while certain choices are just bogus
'war films', like 'dirty dozen' and 'the patriot'.
schindler's list did not have a single battle scene,
while all your other choices do.

how bout hogan's heroes!?! you know, they one where they steal the nazi gold ahead of the US army?!? 😀

Dirty Dozen was a bit of a joke...
The Patriot (while not getting my vote) is a legitimate selection
Schindler's List is a war movie in my mind (and the IMDB's mind). Curiously, Spielberg thinks the holocaust is its own category.

Patton
The Longest Day
A Bridge Too Far
Apocalypse Now
Stripes(just kidding)
Tora, Tora, Tora
The Green Berets
Midway

There are many more.

I think you mean Kelly's Heroes.

I am glad to see that someone other than myself even knows the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! exists. If any of you watched Pearl Harbour, go rent Tora! Tora! Tora! now, for a much better World War II movie.

Kelly's Heroes is a great movie. Donald Sutherland as the 50's beatnik tank driver is classic.

Not on the list though 😉

There is no *1* best war movie, however another one you missed is Otto Premingers "In Harms Way" ... it's what Pearl Harbour should have been...

what is a 'war movie' if you can classify 'schinlder's list' with 'the patriot'
and 'the dirty dozen' ? if 'schindler's list' is a so-called war movie then so
is the diary of anne frank, night porter, shoah, african queen, etc.

some ommissions: hamburger hill, hanoi hilton, ran, kagemusha, and the
deer hunter

so many good ones, i mean heres my top list:
Full Metal Jacket
Saving Private Ryan
ZULU
Shindlers list
Braveheart..
damn its too hard to choose

Guess I'm a fan of the classics:

Tora! Tora! Tora!
Kelly's Heroes
Full Metal Jacket
Cross of Iron (not well-known but incredible East Front battle scenes for its time...had real T-34 tanks!)
Dr. Strangelove (Hmmm...can it count as a WAR movie though?)
The Big Red One
Das Boot
Patton

Oh...and I'll add some TV shows I LOVED as a kid:
Combat! (caught it in re-runs)
Rat Patrol (the A-Team of its day 😉)
Hogan's Heroes

I happen to think Hamburger Hill was awful. The rest, especially Hanoi Hilton could have been on the list. (I am done updating at this point...)
