Can't believe Steve Lukather (one of the founding members of Toto) still isn't on the list, especially with some that are on there. If you don't know who he is (how old are you?) or are questioning whether to add him or not, here are some of his licks. Surely you've heard:
The Tubes - She's a Beauty, yep that was Steve's solo.
Michael Jackson - Beat It, yep even w/ MJ (and EVH).

Many of the songs he's played on are here and here (click 'Steve Lukather', then 'Discography').

And if you don't know who Larry Carlton is, check out his discography here (incl lots of the Steely Dan licks you know and love). He's won grammies!
Heck, he and Steve Lukather even won a grammy together in 2001.

Forgot to mention Stanley Jordan earlier.

And Greg Brady always picked a pretty mean guitar. 😀

How can you not have Chuck Berry on there?
Because he sux.....

good call, jsut like half the guitarist on there....this poll is way too biased....everyone has their own criteria...if you are going for influential...where is kurt cobain, paul mccartney...well, they are not on there because they were not as technically as good....go by quality not quantity or popularity

Kurt Cobain mentioned in a greatest guitarist thread??? you should be spanked for that one. I'm a big Nirvana fan and have most of their cd's but he was definitely not a great guitar player.

McCartney was a bassist which would exclude him from any guitar poll.

By greatest guitarist I mean who has the most technical skill, most influential, did more for the guitar than other guitarists(so somewhat popular...not your neighbor down the street who plays in a band on the weekends)

Removing all those that had 1 or less votes and replacing them with 6 new bloods.

did you even read what i wrote??!??!!?!??!
i was not saying cobain should be there at all!!!

reread

'well, they[cobain] are not on there because they were not as technically as good....go by quality not quantity or popularity'

First thing I'd like to point out is that Jimmie Vaughan's middle name isn't "Ray". 😛 And why isn't Steve Morse on that list? :|

He's not tremendously well known for reasons of his own choosing, but not to give Steve Morse top consideration would be criminal. Guitar Player magazine used to give him top nod anually. If you younger folks don't know who he is go download some of his MP3s and check him out. Find him under his name or the Dixie Dregs. He really is worth the time.

eddie van halen has 20 votes. Is he for real? i'm not a big fan of that type of music. I listened to a little of Van Halen in the '80's I guess everyone did back then, but i never found his playing to be spectacular or anything.

He can only play one style of music, how could he be the best.

I'd post if Jason Becker was on the list. Amazed no one has mentioned him yet, with all the know-it-all posts...

Eddie Van Halen.. Yeah - he's a dick, but a master of his instrument..

He's a fret wanker.

John Williams (no, not the guy that did the Star Wars theme)
Antonio Banderas
Delbert McClinton
B.B. King
Bo Diddley
Duane Eddy
Willie Nelson
Tito Larriva

I voted Yngwie.

Don't really like his music, with a few exceptions, but a good guitarist doesn't have to be a good song writer.
But damn, can he play? Watch those fingers fly...

Oh and he's friggin cool too, "You unleashed the fscking fury!!!" 😀
