Hi.
Vote above for what you think is the best fps ever.
Addtions will only be made if you can justify the addition of a certain title.

I say GoldenEye personally.
Its an awsome game. Great SP. Actually felt like i was 007, unlike NF & AUF. Best MP mode ever, still to be matched imo.

Fraid you do.
Its a popular title, but it hasnt exactely been as ground breaking/genre changing as the above listed has it?

Actually, yes you do.

It is in no way, remotely close, to being the best FPS ever. It is a lot of fun, but not in the top 5.

I think it's one of the best Multi-Player FPS's ever made. As for single player, not too good.

CS. Covered under HL.
UT. Good games, but not exactely SP material is it?

As i said only the big titles are listed. The ones that changed something in the fps arena. Added a new feature that is now a staple of all games after it.

I've got to respect the classics like Wolfenstein 3D (I remember playing that way back in the day on something like a 386 and thinking it was the coolest thing ever) but my personal vote still has to go to Half-Life.

-Engrossing scope/storylines (especially for its time; felt like you were playing out a movie.)
-Strong graphics/gameplay (that could still be played on relatively modest hardware.)
-AI far stronger than other games at the time.
-Legendary multiplayer legacy. It helped bring multiplayer shooters into the mainstream. Q2 had started the trend, but Half-Life really brought it out of the shadows of the computer geek world and into the mainstream. Some of that was simply timing, but most of it was the fact that it was such a great game.

My other personal favorite is Thief for its unique approach to FPS and extremely engrossing gameplay (IMO anyway) but FAR fewer people played it.

it's not groundbreaking or genre-defining

it's a good game yes, but this list is for BEST FPS EVER, not good fps games

EDIT: I voted HL, because well, scripting became mainstream after HL, and look what became of HL, cs, dod, hl2, etc.
Honorable Mentions:
Theif for stealth game
Red Faction for geo-mod engine
NOLF, story story and laughs
Giants because it kicks ass

you're telling me you would rather play goldeneye rather than something like call of duty/half life? :Q!!!!

i can understand if you guys were voting on magnitude of success/revolutionizing etc. but i mean, i dont see how doom 1/wolfenstein original can compete with the likes of call of duty? i mean, they are completely worlds apart in graphics, gameplay, etc.

but i mean in terms of enjoyment or freshness for their time, it would make sense.

Halos only listed so xbox fanatics dont complain.
In truth, Halo is a drastically sub par game in every area. Its good for a console game(cos it has no competitors), but in the PC arena, its rubbish. Everything in its been done before, and better.

is that why it's winning?

You can`t read.
HL is in front.
Halo is level with CoD & GoldenEye.

Half-life, with Quake behind that, and Alice in a close 3rd (would be second, but no replayability).
Quake2 and Tribes however, were the ultimate in multiplayer--no contest.

Man, I still remember being floored the first time I saw screenshots for Doom. It was a must have for me.
