AC/DC has two members who have always been there (Angus Young and Malcom Young). Bassist Cliff Williams joined very early but was still a replacement. Pil Rudd is more or less their original drummer, but he wasn't with them through most of the 80s and early 90s.

Bonham

Here's why - from Rolling Stone - About the new 'live' album

"If Jones -- bassist, keyboardist and sonic gap-filler -- is the band's glue, drummer John Bonham is its loaded gun. Save for "Moby Dick" -- it is, after all, a nineteen-minute drum solo -- Bonham makes each of his percussion stampedes swing like a wrecking ball. He transforms the mystic reverie of "Over the Hills and Far Away" and the country blues of Willie Dixon's "Bring It On Home" into misty-mountain-hop metal. For those pondering the possibility of a Led Zeppelin reunion, here's the last word on why it can't happen: In the studio, Page and Jones may have been Zep's guiding forces and Plant the mighty mouthpiece, but onstage, no one brought down the hammer of the gods like Bonham. "

Definitely Neal Peart (Rush).

Saw Rush perform 3x during the 80s. Hardest playing band I've ever seen.

I voted for Peart, even though I think Rush is prog, not classic, rock.

Mike Portnoy from dream theater is amazing. Not sure if they're considered classic yet or not, but you have to see Dream Theater in concert. You won't regret it at all.

I agree that Mike is a helluva drummer but their live show is weak IMO. All style, no substance. No soul in their music anymore.

I voted for Moon. I thought he was underrated. Glad to see so many Led Zep/Bonham fans, too.

I don't know if the two guys with the most votes could be any more different. I voted John Bonham myself.

Bonham... without a doubt.

Peart is great. The best living drummer. But I think even he'd admit Bonham blew his socks off.

For me, the scale tips in Peart's favor because of the size/variety of his kit *and* the fact that it all has a purpose (i.e. during his live solo's he doesn't just beat on sh*t just to show off, he performs a song that is compossed only of percussion). Also, calling Peart a drummer, IMO, sells him short. The mofo is percussionist.

Bonham without a doubt.
Nobody can match the energy and emotion.

I've never been a big fan of The Who.
Cream and Hendrix are two of my all-time favorites.
And I used to listen to the Police and Rush all the time.

But Bonham is on a whole different level.

And no, the Police are definitely not "classic rock".

If you mean the most technically proficient, I won't argue with you. Peart is amazing.
But for sheer energy and emotion, I've never heard anyone who could compare with Bonham. There is no Led Zeppelin without John Bonham.

Or without Page, Plant, or Jones for that matter.
