It was a bag in the south where I grew up. Up here in Illinois they call it a sack and I almost laugh every time they ask me if I want my new purchase in a sack.

I want to say "I got yer sack right here. THAT (points) is a bag" every time I hear it.

you can stuff your sorries in a sack, mister.

I've always heard "bag" at the store, in Ohio, New England, and DC/mid-Atlantic area.

Bag. I have never humped groceries with a sack. It's always been plastic bag, plastic bag in cart, or cart to car and carry individual items inside.

I've only ever had one grocery store ask if I wanted a sack/bag. Usually they ask what kind of bag/sack. The one place that does ask regularly is a local co-op that asks because many/most of their customers are the smelly hippie type that bring their own bags. Coincidentally, I bring my own but am not a hippie.
