I 4th 'cause it gives some where to go. But if I had a 6-speed, it would be 6th gear just because it was there. Too many times I forget I only have a 5-speed and try to go to 6th but don't have anywhere to go. Frustrating.

<< Stefan, I chose 1st, because that's where it all begins >>

You've obviously never seen a Viper smoke the wheels from dead stop in 6th gear.

I find that hard to believe. But, i'll take your word for it. :)

2nd gear has the best pull especially over 4000 RPM, hence i like 2nd gear the best but nothing is better than revving the hell out of first and slamming it in 2nd.

I like to keep my "R's" at about 4000. Hence I drive in 3rd gear a lot.

thats crazy....you must get terrible milage always keeping the revs around 4k. If im driving normal i keep the revs around 2k, the best milage. Anything under 2k is lugging the motor.

5th gear = driving down an interstate (or highway) listening to U2, coldplay, etc... :D

So in short I like 5th...

Depends on the road. 2nd gives the most "wheEEEEE!" factor in acceleration, first is over too fast, (though the 1-2 upshift is always good for some serious scratch), 3rd allows tight twist roads to be taken like an out of control rocket. 4th allows some good hill climbing at normal highway speeds, though at 85 5th takes that one as the engine seems to pull abnormally strong at 2500 RPM. (4.7+5 speed Dakota, 3.55LS)

<< << I like overdrive. Low RPM=longer engine life and better gas mileage >>

A common misconception.

With most smaller engines it's much harder on them to "lug" the engine (not keep the RPM's up) than it is to rev them higher.

I like to keep my "R's" at about 4000. Hence I drive in 3rd gear a lot.

A common misconception my ass. :Q While its may be true that lugging the engine is more stressful, if you're driving right, you should never lug your engine.

RPMs kill, period. You should never take your engine to the redline. It's considered the safest max RPMs for the design of your engine.

Just think. If your engine has an 8000rpm redline, at that point each one of your pistons are moving up and down 133 times a second. :Q

If you took two engines.. stuck one at 8000rpm with no load, and one at 5000rpm with a load, which one do you think is going to last longer, all other things being equal? Yeah, that's what I thought.

yeah, me too. if that's the case, then why is a transmission needed for?

So THAT's what those other gears are for! No wonder my car has a top speed of 20mph! Now that I can go faster though, it's gotta be 4th gear. Keeps RPM's low (I shift at 2000 RPM's) thus better gas milage. If you see someone doing EXACTLY the speed limit while other cars are zipping by, that's probably me :) A friend and I went down a very busy 25mph road (residential, but busy) every day to college. Every day we would go 20 and watch the line start to form. At the end of the road, we would pull off to the side and count how many cars we lined up that day (the road was maybe a mile or so). The most we got was like 50 cars or so. SOOOO much more fun than going too fast and you don't get a ticket for it!
