but if i had to pick, it would be the 7800GS, as the drivers are much more refined and i havent had troubles with installing them. ATi is still good nonetheless. if the micro center deal is still on for the x850pro/xt, i would get that.

if money is not an issue, then the 7800GS is faster then the 6800gs.

i got in on the Micro Center Deal for my $200 x850xt . . . it was just for the entire month of January.

Here it is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130272

where do you get that the x850xt is "substantially faster than the 7800GS"?

it isn't . . . it is faster than the 6800GS. ;)

and 'pretty close' to the 7800GS . . . win a few benchs , lose a few. ;)

7800GS.

Unless the X850XT is like $60+ cheaper, i can't recommend it.

This is where I get that the X850XT is faster than the 7800GS

pick ONE banchmark :p

Lets look at the CONCLUSION from the review YOU linked to:

FINAL VERDICT:
EVGA?s e-GeForce 7800 GS CO Superclock board is the fastest AGP graphics card overall on the market right now. Sure there are benchmarks where the X800-series cards outrun it (the most prominent being F.E.A.R.), but the e-GeForce 7800 GS CO Superclock delivers better overall performance. By ?overall? we mean in a wide variety of games and applications, running at or near the top in all of the titles we tested. The X800/X850 cards can?t keep up in titles such as Quake 4, IL-2 Sturmovik, and Serious Sam 2. The e-GeForce 7800 GS CO Superclock also boasts a better feature set than the Radeon cards do, it supports HDR with floating-point blending as well as shader model 3.0. On top of that, you?ve got PureVideo support and transparency AA.

next time read all the review

that's 'cause the OP specifically stated:
**PLS DONT MAKE STUPID VOTES BASED ON BIAS**

So IF i prefer the 7800GS - i am 'biased' toward it even though i own an x850xt - should i vote for the x850xt to prove my lack of bias?:p

Bias is good. Or you would have NO opinion. ;)

I meant bias as in brand bias. I've been in this forum long enough to know that people make votes on their favorite brand, not on what is hte ACTUAL better item.

i was j/king . . . but pointing out there are two ways to view your request . . . . no matter what, brand bias influences most posters.

i actually purchased an x850xt in January [i actually tend to prefer ATi, 'overall' but not in specific cases] - but if i had it to do over again today [with prices as they currently stand] - i'd go for the nVidia card.

That said, it appears polls are pretty useless without reasons to back up the vote - especially in this case, where some reviews place the GS ahead of the xt and visa versa.

in the past . . . yes [pre 8500 days] and noticeable to me

However, NO reviews makes anything of big IQ differences anymore . . . i've seen the latest nVidia card's display and i'd say they are rather indistinguishable fron ATi's display

[except for that annoying "SHIMMER"] :p

and those blocky FC shadows

Look, either card is a good deal if you're getting half-off... I hope it's half-off a good price and not like $400... well, $200 would also be good.

I'm not voting in the poll because I'd say get the eVGA Superclock version of the 7800GS. If you can't get that one go with the XTPE.

By the way to everyone saying the GS isn't powerful enough for future SM3.0 games - Oblivion for example implememnts SM3.0 as exclusively performance-enhancing feature, not for extra eye-candy, according to some dev interview (Ars or FS or something). Shade a pixel in less clocks = better.

they are almost the same perforamnce wise. price wise is differnt story. the GS can overclock to give some nice gains. but the x850 can overclock as well. but the prices are pointing to x850 to a better value.

I really cant recommend anything in this poll, because I'd usually just pick the cheapest one, but if money wasnt an issue then I'd switch over to pci-e and not pick any of these two.

Actually the X850XT can run faster 2.0b than the 7800GS can run 3.0 because of the dynamic branching in the 3.0. That''s why to run 3.0 you need a very powerful videocard, but since the DX 10 is around the corner, why bothering to choose the 7800GS over the X850XT if the latter can run generally faster in high resolutions, and has better IQ (Not by much) and there's no effect that the 3.0 do that the 2.0b cannot do (Except True Displacement Mapping). And by the way, OpenEX HDR is not a SM 3 feature for God sakes, but the original HDR is a DX 9 feature based on different math calculations, but the OpenEX HDR is a bit more accurate, but it's performance impact...
