POLL: ATI Catalyst Control Center - Yes/No/Why?

i was wondering if just by installing the CCC does it give performance boosts without doing any tweaking? if not why would people want to use them?

Seems ok on my PC,however it`s bloated and takes awhile to load, the old CC is better for startup time and no way near as bloated, however I read that the new CCC is here to stay so that`s why I`ve it installed, hopefully they can improve the startup time etc .

If by the new you mean the one that seemed to appear with Cat 4.9 beta (for D3). Yeah, I got it. Don't particularly care for it. It's got this annoying, and seemingly useless, vertical bar/tray up the side of my screen. Fist thing upon boot I close it down.

I'm sure I can get rid of it. It's just I'm new to win2k pro and have been too lazy to figure out what to eliminate in startup. I'm gonna reformat soon anyway...

I voted no because I think it requires the installation of .net architecture. And its cumbersome on your system as others have said.

I voted yes because it's more convenient. I couldn't go back.

access all important things by right clicking on the desktop.

3d refresh rate override option, although it only goes up to 85 which I think is retarded. This works better than the previous way where you would access monitor properties in the Control Panel.

You can see the difference between settings with a 3d preview.

Set one set of AA/AF instead of doing it for D3D and again for OGL.

Although, I do agree that it's a bit bulky with it's GUI and it uses up a lot of resources to load up.

Nope. It's too bloated, slow, and irritates me. Granted, the only machine I can run it on is my laptop which has a 4200RPM hard drive which slows everything down, but I literally have to sit there for over a minute to let CCC load up, then once it's opened it's still poky.

As long as you can't specify settings for different games it's useless to me, since I have a registered version of powerstrip.

Yeah, I use the CCC. I think it's pretty good too, just make sure to set it to the "System Skin" and it doesn't run slow at all (that stupid platinum look is what slows it down).

I find it much more convienient and easier to access than the control panel; just right click on the desktop and choose CCC and you're there.

Once again, make sure to hit the View button at the top to get to the real view from the "moron-proof" default they set.

I like a lot of the tabs better - Overdrive looks snazzier, you can choose either the preview mode for 3d or just "No Preview" which is the page with all of the options just like in the old control panel.

All in all I think the CCC is really solid, the only thing that's annoying is that it takes up so much RAM, but I guess it's not much of a problem when you've got a 512MB or more.

Actually it does,I`ve had it set to "system skin" for quite awhile now and it`s still slow, the old CC is way faster.

The new layout/look of CCC is the only positive thing IMHO at this time.

How long does it take to load up for you, Mem?

jiffylube1024,nearly 20 seconds.

Wow, really!? No wonder you have issues with it!

It looks like ATI did a coding job to make Microsoft proud on this sucker. Apparently you need like 3 GHz for it to open quickly, heh.

It only takes 4 seconds for me, which is one of the reasons I don't mind it (clicking through the tabs to get to Video settings from the desktop for the regular control panel takes at least 4 seconds also), but I can see it being an annoyance at 20 seconds to load!!

I do not use the CCC. Primarily because I heard it occasionally uses the internet connection, and I feel there is no reason for drivers to connect to the internet.

Yes, it's sending secret encoded messages to those Canadian spies at ATI 😉 .

It`s the only issue really, all my games work great and stability is excellent,we`ll see how it`s with my next PC(PCI-Express and Athlon 64 combo 😉 ) .

And in regards to the question you didn't ask but were thinking... Yes, I do wear a foil hat whenever I'm at the computer.

I don't use it because I see it as a resource hog. But the latest Omega drivers have some of the CCC features added to the regular control panel; for example, Catalyst AI.

I don't use it because it would not keep the refresh rate when switching users, it would always back down to 60 Hz, then it would not allow me to change the refresh rate until I changed the monitor from Default Monitor to Viewsonic...

Another vote for the Omega drivers here. All the new features without the bloat.
