POLL: Athlon 64 2800+ overclocks

Just curious as to what those of you have been reaching. Due to what I feel are the lack of solid value overclocking s939 boards (and with NF4 still being either nonexistant or way too pricey) and the recent price plunges of s754 chips, I'm pretty much decided that I'm going to go s754 by the end of this month. I plan on banking on a good budget overclock, so I'm going with an A64 2800+ and a thermalright xp-120. For my motherboard, I'm most likely going to pick up an Epox 8KDA3j, unless I can nab a DFI lanparty for $99. After that, I'm going to sell my current mobile barton and Epox motherboard, so the total cost in the grand scheme of things will be maybe $100.

Post your motherboard, HSF, PSU, and if possible, the stepping of your 2800+.
Thanks!

Hmm, we'll see. I've still got two weeks to go before my decision, and I'd prefer to go brand new. Nice overclock though. I'm hoping that with a little luck and an XP-120 sitting on top, I should be able to get 2.4ghz stable, which is my goal. Anything more is just a bonus, but I probably won't run the chip any higher than that.

Hey Avalon,

I have a similar setup to yours. Granted, I have a 3000+ CPU, but I think that the results should be close enough. Here's my current rig:

Epox EP-8KDA3J
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ NewCastle CG Revision (Water-Cooled)
1GB (512MBx2) OCZ Enhanced Bandwidth PC-3700
Antec NeoPower PSU

Along with all the other stuff that doesn't really matter for overclocking potential. Here's my results:

So far, I've got it running Prime stable for about 16 hours at 2500MHz (250 HTTx10). I can't push it much higher than that without failing Prime95 within the first few minutes. I'm not sure what's holding me back, but I think it's just that the CPU has reached it's limit. The temperatures are fine, so I know that that's not it; it peaks at around 47C. The RAM is a possible limiting factor, but I haven't experimented enough to be sure yet.

Anyway, hope this helps,

Like i said, got 2.4ghz OUT THE BOX stock everything stable. I definately think you can get 2.4ghz easy.

And i'm not selling ym chip..noway 😀

it hits 3800+ for peaces sake!! My goal is to get 2.6ghz stable w/my XP-120. If not, I'll e happy w/ 2.57 😀

Not bad for a 144 chip and a dying platform:roll: socket 754 +dfi=HEAVEN!!!!

http://www.nvnews.net/reviews/...ema_cooler/index.shtml

Checkout that HSF. At 1.7vcore and 2.3-2.4ghz with the fan OFF the load temps are around 55C..thats what i get now w/ stock on full blast at lower vcore l2.4ghz speed!!!!!!!

And in low speed mode things get even better. If my CP-120 does'nt perform up to snuff i'm selling it and getting one of those. I'm sorta pissed though, i bought the XP-120 before I saw that. If i had see that HSF i would'nt of gotten the XP-120

Vcore?

Damn, I'm jealous Neptune. My 3000+ will only reach 2.5GHz stable, and it's on water. I should have waited for the DFI board 🙁. Think it could be my RAM holding me back? If that's the case, maybe I should buy one of those DDR boosters and see if I can push it any farther.

EDIT: I posted while you were posting....

My VCore is set at 1.65 right now, but it's reading out at about 1.62. Raising it doesn't seem to help very much, though.

Yep, it didn't help... I think I might have just got a bad overclocker. Oh well. I think I can deal with a 25% overclock, anyway. 2500MHz is better than 2000 🙂

It is indeed better 🙂
Well, it seems like the general consensus is that with an XP-120 (the closest air cooling will ever get to water) and a lack of bad luck (I could always get a complete dud), I'll do 2.4ghz no problem. Actually...I've got a newcastle CG 2800+ in my mom's rig running in an Epox 8KDA3j...I wonder if I could play with it without her noticing, and see how it goes 😉
I'd have to make a road trip to get there though...ah well.
Kickin butt. Keep those votes coming fellahs.

*Edit*
If mine doesn't overclock well, I'll just swap it with hers. Her system is running stock, so it wouldn't matter. lol.

A64 2800+ @ 2.5Ghz (9 x 278) - 1.6V
K8 Silent Boost heatsink w/ Zalman ZM-F1 fan
DFI Lanparty UT nForce 3 motherboard
1GB Super Talent PC3200 3-4-4-8 1T @ 227/454 - 3.0V

The CPU plus HSF was only $115 shipped. Overall a very nice value.

Also have an A64 3000+ socket 754 that runs at 2.4Ghz @ 1.65V but somehow it runs ~5C cooler than the A64 2800+ even though it's .05v higher.

Can't beat the 700Mhz overclock on air.

Nothing like a 2 month old thread getting regurgitated.
Took me two months of saying I was going to upgrade until I finally did, but I wind up getting a sempy instead of an A64. Heh.
