Hmm, I have a question for you ATers. It is my opinion that playing a sport doesn't make you an athlete, per se. I lift weights, run, and play ball w/ my buddies. But I don't consider myself an athlete - I simply exercise and train my body. Now, I don't have a strict definition of an athlete, but one major qualification is that one has to play the sport competitively, as opposed to recreationally. This usually requires a league of some sort. Either way, what do you all think?

i think that playing a sport competitively and having that "win at all costs" attitude makes one an athlete in my eyes. But I am sure "athlete" is more opinion based than anything else. The rec player, like yourself, wouldn't go for that diving save, or break a leg to save a goal...the athlete would (well, maybe not break his leg, but certianly make a sacrafice). Not trying to flame, but the athletes, at least in my eyes, have an inner fire that outshines the rec players.

Well, I don't know. I certainly have that fire. When I lift, I do it to the extreme. When I go snowboarding, I go all out - without fear of breaking any bones, although I have in the past and I'm sure I'll continue to do so. When I run or row on the erg machine, I push myself beyond the point of exhaustion, to the point of feeling lightheaded and almost fainting. When I play ball, I do it to win. This may be simply because I'm young, but it may also stem from the fact that I used to play sports and the desire just carried over. And I kinda get your point. When I go exercise with friends that never played sports I see that I'll push myself considerably harder than they do.

Either way, I still have the desire yet I don't think I'm an athlete. I guess you're right in saying that it is based on opinion. Kind of like the "I know it when I see it" argument.

Never officially, but I mountain bike, golf, run and weight lift. A few times a year. :)

And don't any of you say that those aren't sports.

I'm no athlete but I've recently started running and am entertaining the idea that if I keep at it I might be able to run the Boston Marathon in 2004.The race has all age classes:)

<-- wonders where all the hockey players are...

Y'all are white right? ;) j/k.

An "athlete" to me means you're physically athletic and "able". It doesn't matter if you play competitively or not. It doesn't matter if you're actively doing it or not. If you can throw a ball and look the part, you're athletic. If you can run and do it for a few blocks and still have the ability (and/or desire) to go further, you're athletic.

In my opinion, and I have nothing against it, racing is not a sport. It involves no physical activity (by the driver). Billiards is not a sport. Golf is borderline, and I'm sure you know what I'm getting at.

Physical activity (and looking the part) is the key, IMO.
