The funniest one is the line the gets used occasionally around here "Don't call me Oriental - I'm not a rug".

This is new to me
I think I might use it in jest and get lame looks from friends :)

I haven't heard anyone use "Oriental" to describe peoples of Asian descent in a long time. Even when I did hear it, it never struck me as negative in the same way as the n-word. In any case, "Oriental" seems to be a pretty antiquated term that has lapsed in use.

Anything could fall in that 'offensive' category.

that makes sense. most people probably wouldnt get offended if they said "you are white". but if they said "you are a fat mother fvckin' white boy" it would seem in context that they are using "white" offensively. same goes for all words. but i would consider a racial/ethnic insult worse than physical or mental characteristic.

why is Ch1nk offensive?

another one, i'm not sure if it was covered already in this thread or not, but the term G00K comes from the Korean war because Koreans referred to themselves in Korean as "Han G00k Sa Lahm". which means Korean people. g00k more or less means people or nationality.

surprise surprise the word "g00k" is ver botten.

in fact, many black people refer to themselves as that word. if you dont believe me, listen to a rap song or go to a high school. the words themselves are meaningless. its the connotation and association with them that makes them bad. thats what i think.

words have only as much power as we give them. the emphasis on words over the thoughts they are supposed to represent is what i hate soo much about PC.

It's funny how no one has really descirbed why or how oriental is offensive.I guess the term is dated and references a time when there was more Asian bias. Although i like the generic term Asian as then I don't have to specify what specific nationality that person is as it's hard for me to tell sometimes and everyone is so quick to be offend if you state the origin incorrectly.

I could see why...white americans would object if someone asked if they were mexican (I know that's not the point you were making though).

oriental is just a geographic term.

us new yorkers are technically orientals to you west coast people.

being korean, i'd rather be called Asian or Korean.

but if you're located west of me, then oriental is fine :)

u rikey da pawk fly lice??
