oh that's another one I get free reign to go after:

she got called ching chong hoe one day and thought someone was being friendly

put it this way the time after I was told about this, she walked away from me in action because she felt sorry for the punk, but thought he still deserved it.

I should perhaps be on a chain most of the time.

Depends on what context, but people who ususally use the word oriental are not exposed to the "bigger world"

I'm indifferent, but I prefer asian. Though, most of the time people think I'm mexican. :D

Not Asian. While the term "Oriental" is, geographically speaking, Euro-centric, "Asian," it could be argued, lumps a group of distinct cultures and peoples into one.

Choose your poison.

asian refers to all countries in asia, whereas oriental is primarily chinese, japanese, korean

it maybe older, but seriously, was it "offensive" 5 years ago? seems like it was only deemed offensive within the last few years. because i know that it was not yet taboo when i was a kid, which wasn't long ago.

Nyet. I think the whole "asian" vs. "oriental" thing is PC BS gone awry. Do I look like I like being grouped with Indians, Middle-Easterners, etc? NO. If you have to classify me, call me "Oriental," it's at least more accurate than "asian."

The only words that I feel is deragatory are: "beloved patriot", slant eyes, and ricer oh and "jap" too.

It's not offensive, it's just glaringly obvious that the person who says it has not been around Asian people.

yeah, I wouldn't necessarily be offended, I'd just make a mental note that the person doesn't really quite realize that "oriental" isn't used anymore, which wouldn't be a good thing for them.

But it's okay, most of my friends are APAs anyway

Is it even PC to use Oriental for those that actually are technically Oriental any more?

Why do people give a sh!t about this stuff?

The funniest one is the line the gets used occasionally around here "Don't call me Oriental - I'm not a rug".

Yeah, and "Don't call me white, I'm not snow"

Makes a whole hell of a lot of sense, doesn't it?

When I hear someone refer to a person as "oriental," it is usually spoken by some backwoods redneck, i.e. the same type of person who still calls blacks "neg-roes."
When did the term "Oriental" fall out of general favor?
Merriam-Webster still uses it to define Eastern Asia and its inhabitants.

Ricer to me is a lot more offensive than "oriental".

That real rough a word in the english language to discribe a place that was orginail only used in europe is euro-centric what a surprise. What to guess on the origians of the beloved term Asian. I think the only reason orientals go there panties in a bunch over the term is that if they call themselves asains they think it makes them more important.

I remember two years ago some freak group around here was passing out flyers with all the hate words. One of them was 'oriental' and I was perplexed. I thought it was just a normal word. It is a ramen noodle flavor for Pete's sake. It had some other one's that I thought were wierd too, like 'wussy'. I guess the convienently forgot 'cracker' though.

dunno .. take an ethic or asian american college course. they can better explain it. Im sure those paid professors are in a better position to tell you than the very slanted opinions of the forums.

nope... i think most euro - nations also use that term ALOT instead of using Asian.

only thing that really ticks me off is chinnk or making fun of a sterotype asian name.. like ching chong bang wang.. or whatever.
