You would really go to jail before joining the Military? Sure, it isn't the best job in the world but food, housing, training and 30K+ a year sure beats committing a crime, being found guilty of a crime and going to jail.

Or, I guess in that 1 year off you could find another job.

Not likely with the douchebag we have in office now. (And yeah, I am a Dem.)

So the guy's been in office less than 2 months and he's already a douchebag? Give him some time, damn. If Obama's a douchebag, then what does that make Bush? A douchbackpack?
more like a douche UPS plane

If you get convicted, it'll stay on your records... when you get out, it'll make your life difficult. You'll also have a bigger asshole and walk funny.

If you sign up for the military, it'll stay on your records... when you get out, it'll make your life easier. You'll also be in better shape.

In either case, once you're in, you ain't getting out for a set period of time although in the army you have a better chance depending on your circumstances.

You can always get out very quickly just by smoking dope. You'll get a General Discharge at worst and will be on your way.

I don't know what you meant about the Army comment though. In any service it is always possible to get out of your obligation for certain reasons. I saw it happen many times. Technically you can get out for being too fat and not being able to pass the fitness tests too. I saw one really good guy get discharged for it. He loved his job and was good at it, he just was fat and wouldn't do anything about it. Damn shame, the guy was a very good artilleryman.

Which comment? The not getting out? I also pointed out that there is a better chance to get out in the army. In jail, you're in until the time is served short of an early parole. In the army, for all intents and purposes you're stuck there too once you've signed the paperwork *but* there are ways to get out depending on your circumstances like your example of the guy being too fat.

I've never served so I'm not an expert to the extents of which one can do to leave the military.

Okay, I understand, I thought you were saying it was easier to get out of the Army than other military services.

I've only been locked up for a grand total of 10 hours in my life. It wasn't that bad, we got some bologna sandwiches, got to trade some pee for a snickers bar and some guys even had playing cards to keep them busy.

It was sorta fun now that I think about it.

wtf

I'd have to go with Army. Jail is way below homelessness I think. I mean, when the economy looks better my stint in jail isn't exactly going to look great on a resume. And the Army feeds you and gives you a bed to sleep in, plus you get to get some exercise, fire guns, learn to fix tanks or shit like that. Sounds way better then sitting in a cell trying to think of ways to protect my butthole.

lololol, my ass. We had fun and even bought those gay chains commemerating it...dick.

military if I could get in... I gave serious thought to trying to when I was a senior in college but a friend who was in the ROTC told me not to even bother because of some medical conditions.

What about Don't Ask Don't Tell? I wanted to join the military but I won't go into the closet for it.

Military. Less chances of dying out of the three. It's not bad too if you get to serve in a nice location.

Prison: No luck, you are butt-sex and then killed by an Aryan prison gang for not hating blacks. Or by blacks if you are white.

Homeless: Finding food is hard unless you live in a college town but I rather sleep indoors and not get beaten up by six 18 year olds for being smelly/homeless.

I'm fairly anti-war and even I would pick military service over jail or being homeless.. I'm pretty scrawny and flabby so I'm sure to end up with a cushy support role, and not some kind of bullet absorbing grunt.

I imagine jail to be a 24hr Oz style rape-fest. Did you see what Adebisi does to people?!

And they pay you to be there, and they'll probably throw in free college tuition on top of that, and travel too, especially if you join the navy.

Army or military? I'd pick either of them over Jail or homelessness, but I probably wouldn't pick the army if I had a choice. It think the military would be a great experience, you serve your country, learn some skills, actually become usefull to society. In jail, you are a waste of money, time, and space and contribute nothing. You make things worse for our entire country. It'll go on your record when you get out and you'll have a tougher time finding a job.

But, but then you've got to float around the ocean in a tin can with a bunch of seamen.

Scrawny & flabby is not a problem, they have Basic Training to take care of that. I'd rather go in scrawny & flabby than fat, it would be much easier. Little guys make good infantrymen that are especially well suited to clearing out tunnels when the situation calls for it.

For some reason I think of Willam Defoe in Platoon going in the bunker when I read that. 😛

I make about $43k after being in for 3 years. Close to half is non-taxable, and the rest is non-taxable anytime you enter a hostile fire zone. There are all sorts of per-diem and special duty pays you can get depending on your job. I have friends who have made $8k one in month all tax free. Not bad for a single guy. It's not a bad deal, but it's not for everyone. I wouldn't re-enlist for $1mil.

With the new GI Bill I'm economy proof for the next four years as long as I stay in school.
