poll: are you using a dedicated sound card or onboard on your primary system?

Both.
Sound card for main surround speakers.
On board for background tasks ,chat, skype etc with headphones or second speakers depending on situation.

You should be slapped. Unless you use your presumably spectacular external source + rockets to play blissful music 24/7 and completely ignore the sound your computer produces.

i am going to take a guess and say digital on board out. this is what i use also, and it really is not much worse than any other digital out. i let my receiver process the signal. I wish i could get my digidesign card w/motorola dsp and nice opamps to work. 🙁
 
Where's the poll?

Anyway - I use on board on all 4 systems - 2 desktops and 2 laptops. All connected to good external stereo amps and speakers. Sound is better than any computer speakers with a built-in wimpy amp.

Too bad you didn't make this a real poll.
 
Dedicated.

The onboard (AC97) has a permanent hiss when nothing was paying that drove me nuts. That, and too much noise on the line-in.

I'm a bit of an audiophile so... I did. 😀

Also, I use Guitar Rig 3 (software that simulates a guitar amp on your desktop, useful to play late at night with headphones without waking up the lady) and the input for the electric guitar in the onboard had too much noise, the sound quality was disastrous. With my X-Fi the sound is as clear as crystal now. 🙂
 
Gaming PC, 2008 and 2006 builds: onboard analog 5.1

The analog outs are just feeding into a $70 Logitech 5.1 system, which is good enough for game audio and music.

Music server: onboard coax digital out

Digital out to Onkyo receiver and Polk bookshelf speakers

The lossless FLAC audio will sound the same from the onboard digital or the digital out on a $500 soundcard. The Onkyo does the decoding to analog.
 
i have an audigy 2 in my current system. reason is because I record my guitar through the external inputs that are in the 5.25" bay
 
I'm using an Xfi fatal1ty that I got when I had XP. In retrospect I'm a little sorry I got it. The front panel access is nice, but I'm not sure it's worth $120(A great deal when I got it) :^/
 
Primary machine uses SigmaTel onboard audio. Secondary has an Audigy 2 ZS, but I seldom use audio with that box. The HTPC uses a combo: onboard for LiveTV (to get ProLogic) and an original Audigy for DVD (for discreet audio).
