Just wondering how we compare to our parents.
I think the trend will be that kids will become more successful since the kids will have better education and opportunities than the parents.
That is, unless your parents are a successful business owner or big shot CEO.
Kids of the ultra rich usually tend to be snobby brats that grub off their parents for life.

*If you have a higher degree than one parent but lower than the other, chose No (you do not have a higher degree than your parents; one of your parents still has a higher degree than you do).

**If your parents are retired, calculate their salary of their highest paid position.
**Those with single parents or only one parent working, use 'average' and not 'combined'

Less schooled... More money.

You might want to qualify that it is (or isn't) relative to inflation.

No, Less Money, and more successfull

Dad has 2 PHDs, mom went to college for Journalism. My dad is really smart, but never had money sense. Mom is smart, too, but more money sense. Both really good people, in general. But I feel more successful because I am starting to plan my life much earlier than they did and have had better opportunities than they had.

more educated than dad (BS), less educated than mom (PHD)
make less than both of them right now, in a couple years will make more than mom
in 5 years more than dad, a few more after that more than them together :)

if all goes according to plan...

I don't have as good an education as my father, and I will probably never be as smart as him... he reads like a MOFO!!! :) And my brother literally has a photographic memory, so when I once used to think I was smart, I feel like a dumbass in my house :p

As per the money issues.. I think it's too early to tell though obviously right now, I make less than both my mom and dad. That will change after I get my new job (hopefully soon!), and at least I'll be making more than my dad :D

Both my parents were filthy poor back in Taiwan. Now they're making over $100k combined with no college education. Dad became a mechanical technician for STOLL America back in the 80s and got his working Visa to move to the US. Sent cash back for the rest of the family to move over. Mom worked for Finese Novelty Corp. for over 4 years nows.

Although I'll graduate with a college degree in May, I find that their level of success will definitely overshadow anything I can ever accomplish.

not sure how much my parents make. dad works in a manager position at OPPD at mom works at a high rise down by the river. once i get my degree (only 3.75 years of college left!), i'll make a lot of money but hell at this point who knows. maybe i won't get the degree i want.

if i can't handle this degree, i'm gonna become a music teacher!

Well I have had this job since December 2003. Very easy job, make my own hours, and come to work dressed how I want. I used to make 7.50 though, before I went to one job about a month ago (makin 15 an hour) and quit cause it sucked. When I came back they gave me a raise to 8.50, So for the past 1.5 years it was 7.50 an hour ;)

Also, dont forget cost of living in south louisiana is very low. I was paying $150 a month for a house with two other roomates for the longest time and it was literally across the street from campus.

This job was a great slacker college job but I am 23 and its time to move on I guess.

Taiwanese rule BTW :)

My parents were pretty well off in Taiwan (grandfathers (both sides) were businessmen, one was also a journalist). But because of all the civil unrest there at the beginning, all the educated people were being snubbed out, especially the news reporters and teachers, so they all left. But when they moved here they had nothing.

My Dad is pretty successfull and a much harder worker than I am. He is retired now but made more money than I am making. Mom worked at the public library for 43 years and made penuts. At least I make more than she did. How does one measure success without sounding like a TV spot? I will not be able to afford a nice house like Dad has. I can't afford to buy an apartment in the neighborhood I grew up in.

I have much more schooling than both of my parents, mom some college, dad has an associates and I will finish my masters in the spring, while my sister is a lawyer. We were pushed very hard to get our education. I considered myself successful when I walked across the stage and will even more so the 2nd time. (school was/is not easy for me)

I make as much or more than my mom but not even near what my dad makes. He would be making much much much more if he would have just gotten his BA/BS.

My parents have always been happy. My wife and I are happy. To me, that is successful.

My dad was a H.S. teacher. My 1st job out of the Air Force (4 years out of college) had a starting salary about the same as he retired from teaching at. We both have an M.S.

So financially, yes. But success is alot broader then that - it'll be a long time before I compare myself to him in terms of overall success.

I just got a master's and I'm still in school working toward a Ph.D. Both parents have a master's but my dad also has a specialist in education degree. When I finish my Ph.D., I guess that's higher. If I work in industry I'll make more money, if I teach at a university it'll probably be about the same.
