Long live ps2 ports! And I thought I was the only one still using em for my mouse and keyboard. I guess I can say I am an 'enthusiast' computer user, and never use onboard stuff. I like using high-end 'peripherals'. I only use onboard video and LAN for servers, and workstation desktops, but never for 'hardcore' gaming! :) I even use the ol legacy game port on my SB for my FF joystick.
Since when is a Game or PS2 port a "high-end peripheral" compared to USB? ;)

Just because it's USB, means it's high-end? Pfft! :)

Onboard cr@p sucks.
Decent onboard peripherals, pile them on!

On a related note, where the hell's nforce2? I'm going to be waiting forever with this p2-300.

IIRC, Evan Lieb said that boards will start tricking in this month and that the chipset will be in full force in November.

Thugsrock you help this board out enough with the 1.6/8A OC and XMS shootout tests. I just wanted to know if you could point me in the direction of info on less OCing, stability etc.. with the P4B533E.

On another note, sounds like you've had some nice setups on your rides. We're you ever spraying on any of them? I bet that 89 Vette would have been deadly with it. Add a little port and polish throw ina test pipe you'd be in the high 11's. I got a somewhat modded 300zx TT, and an mx-6. Helping my friend rebuild his 69 camaro SS.

ok now ~ back OT :D

Question: has anybody who ever purchased an i845G motherboard used the onboard video, ever? Nope, didn't think so;).

I agree with most of you: onboard LAN and USB2.0, possibly RAID, are fine for me provided (as nemo160 pointed out) that they consume minimal cpu resources. You can keep the onboard sound, video, and Firewire, though:p.

Even though I don't use onboard USB,sound, raid, firewire, lan and video i guess a couple things is ok like USB and Lan.Usually there are 2 versions of mobo's one with raid and one without for people that need it.Maybe you should have made another selection for "some onboard garbage"...LOL.Most seem to like some features like USB,Lan and Raid.

I can't stand tons of on-board components. If you can't tell the difference between a AC'97 and a Audigy Sound Card, you are deaf. However, I think the nForce's APU should be better than the AC'97, I atleast hope so. Personally, from the High-End Users point of view, most on-board compenents suck. I enjoying have a onboard NIC,USB2.0 and the such. At sometimes though, enough is enough!

I like the extra features. Maybe I won't use them right away, but when the parts get cycled out of my main system it's certianly nice not to have to put in a network card or sound card.

Well, the low-end Dell systems use the onboard video, but I don't think that's what you meant ;) However, many people do use the onboard video that comes with the nForce. For people who either A) Don't game, or B) Only game occasionally, the onboard gF2 MX graphics is fine. With the nForce 2 (you should start seeing boards this month), the onboard gF4 MX graphics are really enough for most gamers and would be great for a LAN party box, though obviously most hardcore gamers wouldn't be caught dead with gF4 MX graphics.

Yes, the nForce APU is MUCH better than AC '97. In fact, it rivals and, in some areas, beats the Audigy. Hell, even the C-Media 8738 compares with SB Live! cards.

Here's my vote for getting rid of the on-board cr@p, and I'm qualified, my -E has everything INCLUDING the seat....;)

And here's my vote for being an auto oc'er also....vrrrmmm :)

i had an 85 (illegal) TA that ran 12.5s on street tires/no mufflers and a top speed of 180mhz.

Haha you said mhz. Nerd :)

I love my onboard sound and lan. As many reviews said, and I agree, even though onboard lan is equivalent to some cheap pci cards, you don't need to spend extra money to buy something you won't even see the difference in, unless you are on like a t3 network (which I highly doubt many of you are) or download lots of pr0n (which I don't doubt). And my onboard sound is good enough since I only have 2.1 speakers.

What kind of oc are you guys, hating things that free up pci slots so you can put huge powerful fans that can suck pineapples through a garden hose in there instead?

With the NFORCE series buying add in cards is a waste of money, that's the only regret I have about going intel right now.

hmm, I hate legacy-free boards. I have 3 (yes 3) serial and 1 parallel devices. Serial: Psion Series 5 PDA. Panasonic MiniDV Camcorder. UPS. And a parallel port scanner (and another printer).

USB: Well, why not? I only have 1 USB device atm, but you never know if you need more.

I don't mind on Board audio if they use cheap stuff. I mean, come-on, how many cents do these chips cost? I don't mind. If they use high-end stuff, I don't really like because my sound card is pretty usable already and I don't want to pay the cash for a sound card I don't use (except the on board stuff is SO good...). On board video... well, if its cheap why not? Can use for dual monitor etc. The problem is that I need a board with Firewire (MiniDV camcorder)... but Firewire is always the highest option... means if you want a board with Firewire, you'll need all those other stuff too... but when I don't need Bluetooth or RAID etc.? Thats the expensive stuff.

onboard lan is equal to a low end 10/100 nic card
The onboard LAN on the nForce 2 chipset is at the same level as high end intel 100 mbit nics.

onboard video is equal to a gf2 mx
lol... when it would be at that level it would be good! Only the nForce 2 chipsets have somewhat power (not much tho). But as long as it works...

onboard sound is equal to a soundblaster 128
Hmm... IIRC the SB128 has much better sound (not features) than those SB Live (look on some more audio forums... they "HATE" the Live... and the Audigy is not really on their top 10 list too)...

Oh... and of course I'm using PS/2 :D

hmm, I'd like to edit, but the servers are slow as... atm!

anyone know if using onboard lan slows down your computer? i would imagine it does to some degree however notthing noticeable...
nope. There is a review (I think on Anandtech.com... 'bout the nForce 2) where Anand is benching the nics... there you can see how different boards and nics perform. The nForce 2 one is excellent, the VIA one is rather decent, but not worse than your average Realtek card IIRC (and I don't think it matters if the Realtek chip is sitting on the board or on an additional PCI card...). And then... hey, some new boards (Asus A7V8X for example IIRC) with gigabit LAN integrated...

hhhmmm...I _like_ onboard stuff, as long as it _isn't_ crap. I have Shuttle AK35GT2...not great, but it was the cheapest thing with good onboard sound. By "good" I mean it sounds as good as any SBLive! Value, I can make out nice little things like singers breathing, and absolutely no crackling. If I had the money I'd get an Abit AT7 MAX2...onboard USB 2, Firewire, sound, NIC, etc., _and_ 5 PCI slots.
Now, how anyone can not use USBs there is beyond me...I have a USB printer, USB mouse, USB trackball (I like the trackball, but it doesn't cut it for gaming), USB gamepad, USB flash reader (only 4 ports :-/)...and most anything I get in the near future that isn't internal will be USB.
In additon to that, I'm now using 2 PCI slots (NIC, TV tuner), and when I get the money (I'm in college :)), I'll have a few more, and could very well run out of room, such that my extra USB ports and center/sub out will need to hang out of the machine.

Onboard is good! (but outboard isn't bad)

well, I'd say: for things where most users wouldn't buy additional hardware to get better quality (firewire, usb 2.0, LAN, maybe bluetooth), why not. I like onboard. Stuff like RAID and sound should be optional. I would like to see a version plainer than plain... nothing additional on board, then maybe a cheapo OEM version including sound and graphic (only cheapest of cheap), a enthusiast solution with Firewire, USB 2.0 (if not already inside the chipset), bluetooth (maybe optional). Then a enthusiast version with RAID, a enthusiast version with sound (but high quality...), and a enthusiast version with RAID and sound. Ok, that would be a little too much, but if possible, that would be cool. I don't want to have to pay for RAID just to get Firewire! Oh... and one more thing... GIVE THE BOARDS DIFFERENT NAMES! Hey, what sux more than 5 product versions running under exactly the same name? You order one thing and get the wrong one because the dealer had no knowledge of what he's selling and just copy & pasted the manufacturers infos... (who of course only posted the top versions infos).
