Long live ps2 ports! And I thought I was the only one still using em for my mouse and keyboard. I guess I can say I am an 'enthusiast' computer user, and never use onboard stuff. I like using high-end 'peripherals'. I only use onboard video and LAN for servers, and workstation desktops, but never for 'hardcore' gaming! :) I even use the ol legacy game port on my SB for my FF joystick.
Since when is a Game or PS2 port a "high-end peripheral" compared to USB? ;)

Onboard 100mbit LAN won't look so great when Gigabit Ethernet becomes fashionable amongst Anandtechers... it'll just add to the cost... so I'd favor "pure" editions of motherboards for anything like video/sound/LAN... the only exceptions would be near-universal things like USB or (S)ATA.

Of course, for my pizzabox server I needed just the opposite. Everything built in, compact and compatible.

No ~ i like onboard cr@p
Good one :D:D:D

I like on-board stuff (not video) as long as it performs decently.

I think the AC97 onboard sound is decent, I use it, and did not notice a difference between it and my soundblaster....

I like it even if I don't use it.

Because when I'm done with my Epox 4g4a+ it goes to the kids.
Then I don't have to buy a video card, sound card, or nic. Just add cpu, ram, hd and they're good to go.

Well I use alot of USB devices (4), Id like FireWire onboard, like having LAN onboard, video though not really, sound yes, I like having a nice clean setup inside the case, less PCI cards the better!

I don't mind it at all, except for video. Thats a bit too presumptuous by the MB makers for me. I've never really cared all too much about the sound as long as it's there. Come to think of it, my current rig is using ghetto rigged speakers from a $50.00 radio I got for 7th grade confirmation. I'm now 28 hahaha.

Is there any truth to FPS or any other such lagging in games etc... due to onbaord peripherals?
I'm about to build a new gaming rig (mostly for Q3) and would be interested to know.

onboard lan is equal to a low end 10/100 nic card
onboard video is equal to a gf2 mx
onboard sound is equal to a soundblaster 128

some mb companies give you less pci slots becuase the stuff is built in too.

i wanna see a mb with this onboard, then i'll buy it: onboard GF4 128, and sound blaster live 5.1, and 100/1000 nic card

Nah. Once you disable it in the BIOS, it has no affect on anything.

thats not entirely true....
we have noticed that there is a big difference between the P4B533 and the P4B533-E when overclocking.
there was also i big difference between the P4B266-C and the P4B266.

quite a few ppl think that just taking up the "real estate" is enough to make a diff ~ i find it hard to disagree.

:)

I modded my mobo. epox 8kha+. i soldered off the audio jax and dremeled the audio chip off and soldered the end to terminate. it works great and i still see bright red "FF":D

had to try it on the lesser mobo... now i'm gonna do it to my soltek. thank GOD my asus p4t-e doesn't have onboard audio... too much work!

i'm serious.

wut made me think about it was on my p4t-e it was the same board with the audio chip removed and terminated. in the bios u still have to disble audio.

so i thot, y not just do it myself? if i screwed up the board its no big deal. i had the tools so i cut and soldered. if u look closely its not the prettiest thing but it lets me sleep in peace at night knowing i overcame the F***ing onboard onslaught. Damn mobo companies are stupid as hell. all they care about it selling to the corporates...

Why not simply disable the crap you don't want. I only really don't want to have onboard video and/or sound. Other than that, I think everything is great as far as I can think of right now.

I want to see some benchmarks that prove how much of a difference that onboard stuff makes. I really can't imagine it making much more than a 5fps difference. What justifies going through so much trouble to remove it from your board? Save power? Reduce heat? Noticeable performance increase? Reduced overall case weight? I don't get it. Why not just disable the device in windows?

serious drag racers remove their AC, heater, and spare tire ~ just for 1/10 of a second! ;) :D

Except for onboard video the rest is fine. You can disable the audio in the bios if need be. The mobo's do not cost more because of it, hell, they are as inexpensive as ever.

Thugsrock your killing me here. How big of a difference of an OC did you assess with the p4b533E and where is the info? I plan on buying that board. You also seem to know alot about racing what type of ride you have?

So to clarify; if you disable onboard options in Bios, they won't slow you down. But if don't disable they will slow you down? I'm talking sound and Lan specifically here.

well it's more of a statement than a performance thing. i don't want onboard sound and i'm anal like that. and i'm not saying everyone shud do it so don't start with the pissy attitudes about disabling it in bios. some ppl like to order from a menu... i like to get the slab of hamburger and goto the fixins bar

Dolemite1 ~ the P4B533-E isnt the same as a regular P4B533. there are many (minor) differences in performance / overclockability / stability.
prove it? ~ no thx ;)

i dont hot rod cars anymore.
i had an 85 (illegal) TA that ran 12.5s on street tires/no mufflers and a top speed of 180mhz.
69 350 LT1 with edelbrock 7000rpm package / holley 4150 750 ~ 5 speed auto ~ 3.90 gears ~ no computer

i traded it for an 89 (legal) Vette that ran 13.0 on street tires/ full exaust and a top speed of only 155mph.
stock engine w/ TPIS modified fuel injection / ram air ~ 4 speed auto ~ flowmaster exaust / no cats

i now own an 89 buick :Q

So catering to 95% of the market is stupid?

Personally, as long as the onboard components are 'good enough' and don't use up too many CPU cycles, then I'm happy with it. Also, don't forget that most boards have a 'light' version that only has onboard USB and AC '97 sound (blegh). I think Abit has a board that has no onboard components except about 8 USB ports. No sound, no RAID, no NIC, no Firewire, just a boatload of USB ports. But if you wan't a really bare board, get an an ancient one. ;) I have some boards laying around that have an onboard AT keyboard jack. Period. You have to stick in a freakin' mouse card. (or, more accurately, an I/O card including mouse, parralel, serial and IDE ports (yes, the board doesn't even have onboard IDE))

I buy for onboard. I don't want to buy another NIC and configure it, have a SBLive sitting in the closet 'cos the CMedia sounds just fine and love those RAID ports!
On board video was always a bad idea - doesn't it only come in ultra-budget boards?
Grinding the audio chip off your board is like taking the radio out of your car with an axe - it makes a statement, but it kind of limits your options down the road.
