I am a manager and directly review my employees (ie. their raise depends on ME!). Just curious who else is.

Edit, poll might be a bit off, but suggestions are welcomed.
 
I'm a Systems Manager. Just like people, they tend to complain and not do what they are told to do. 😛

I hypothesize that 80% of the poeple on ATOT are in management (if we get 100 people to answer this poll)
 
I'm not a manager, and never want to be one. In fact, on our team, we all chose to make our intern our manager (so far it's working out pretty well, actually).
 
I am a software architect - I manage the developers on the project team but do not do their annual reviews. I like it this way....
 
This poll is whacked. There's no way there are so many managers in any forum that isn't devoted to managers & management for the simple fact that there are many more of those that are managed than those that are managers.

Unless you set the raises you aren't really a manager.
 
whats the term backoffice mean? To me it means anything that doesn't generate money...so that doesn't really qualify as a valid option rite? because you can be a manager AND in the backoffice...

I'm a general manager for ATOT favorite fast food McDonalds.
I'm in charge of 7 assist. managers and ~45 employees.
And they all love me 🙂

Non management, programmer. I work very hard. Most people in the department know I work hard. Most know I am a team player (I help anyone out regardless of whether they are asses or not because it is about getting the work done). My manager is somewhat lazy, so it makes my job much harder. She knows I am a hard worker, but sometimes can be unreasonable with requests that are simply not able to be done. I have made a name for myself in the department, and I am doing good work. I have gotten a raise in my pay within 6 months of starting. I am getting a 2 step raise, more than likely, in a week on my review day.

But again, OP, there are bad managers and some people have them. That is all.
 
I am a manager (who manages other people) and am interviewing internally for a Senior Management position next week. With the exception that the pay will be more and bonus % is higher, don't ask me what the difference is between the two.

I'd like to know how you conclude she is lazy? Because she doesn't do the programming anymore, because she plays on the internet (which is exactly what you are doing), or because she just doesn't come to work? My guess is your impression is based solely on comparing what you do versus what you see her do. What you probably don't see are the meetings, paperwork, personnel issues and other crap she handles on a daily basis. I won't even count the beating she gets from senior management if something goes wrong in her department. If you think you have it bad when she gets on your case, you've seen nothing.

and the budgeting, the headcount...its not easy stuff...
 
I am in a management domain, but don't currently manage anyone and that's not on my job description. I have managed before, however.

And I agree with the management threads, as most managers get piss poor training and end up sucking donkey balls. Myself included, the first time I tried it.


Edit: I do play around on the Internet quite a bit at work, but that's not my fault. I have practically begged for more work, but they don't want to give it to me for policitical reasons. Of course my job is probably more fscked up than others.

crap, I forgot about budgeting. That, in most large companies, is a 4-6 month project.
And if you don't meet budget, you better have a damn good reason.
