In some ways, we're progressing. In other ways, we're degenerating or standing still.

Degenerating. However, lots of this has to do with how many people are in the world now. I suppose that there is still the same proportion of good people to bad people, but the bad people are now protected by law and have huge mouths. The reason why I think things are going downhill is because of the internet and the media. The internet because stupid people believe anything that is posted on the internet and lots of stupid people put stupid stuff on there, thus spreading the stupidity to more people than ever before. The media because they are just modern day rhetoricians and rhetoricians don't care about right or wrong and more often than not, wrong brings in the biggest crowds.

I think we started going downhill in the 60's with the ghey counterculture. But I agree, the internet has aided to our degeneration. I saw a site that posted pictures of your sh!t. Disgusting and a disgrace. WTF is wrong w/ people?

Still, I believe we are progressing technologically. But socially we are somewhat at an impasse. Our economy and society as a whole hasn't been progressing for quite some time, IMHO.

How about the athiest population? I'd like to see a consensus on that; how many athiests there were pre-1960 and now.

A majority of people have said the world is degenerating generation by generation since the beginning of time. Everyone looks at their generation and thinks it was great - and sees the new unexperienced kids out there rebelling and then concludes that things are getting worse. But do you think things have gotten worse forever?

What, exactly, would that data prove? It can be argued that religion (or lack thereof) is a good or bad thing.

I'd actually say that "counterculture" is our only hope to survive as human beings.
