Poll: Are floppy drives/disks the biggest POS computer componets ever?

Geez, make them die. They suck. I would think after what, 15 years, the industry could perfect the floppy disk so that it doesn't die after 2 uses. I mean, I have some that I use all the time and work great, and then I have boot disks that die on the first or second use. :|:disgust:

I think they are kind of cute! Nice poll....guess i'll vote, and i'll take a floppy over an imac anyday, even those fat 8"ers...

Heck, I still use mine for storing a few docs here and there. Or to give somebody a little file instead of burning an entire CD.

I miss the 5 1/4", now those were fun!! Many of you probably never even seen one except in computer class. Now that was a floppy!

Those punchtape machines were pretty trashy, too. I'm not sure which is worse--dropping a stack of punch cards, or having the tape break....
I guess dropping the stack...

Floppy disks have their place, but their time is at an end... And I had a C64, so I do remember loading up Zork.... What-a-game!

Floppies die? I have hundreds of floppies from the late 80's and early 90's (both sizes) and have never had one die. CD's yes, but not floppies. In fact I booted up DOS 3.2 the other night with the original floppy that I used thousands of time (computer has no hard drive). Still works.

I rarely use my floppy drive but it works flawlessly every time. If it were to ever break a replacement TEAC is like $10 at Fry's B&M.

yea, every other floppy disk I use dies. It sucks, I just don't use them any more.

My floppy died last year and I've used the same one since it was in my 486 dx2/66. I never use it anymore so i unplugged it and left it in my computer....it just doesn't look the same without it.

Used on PDP-11 that controlled a mass spectrometer.

Your mistake was buying junky Sony instead of Teac.

I still use floppies for boot disks...and I goto a university where everyone saves there documents at school on a floppy. besides...its easier to say the floppy disk got jacked up and you couldnt turn in your homework or project than say oh my cd-r failed.

well if any other component in your computer was from the same era it would suck too.

ex. modern cpu with 1mb of DIPP RAM

or

modern rig, 8086 cpu.

Man has become overly dependent on "high-technology." When civilization crashes and chaos reigns, where will your CD-Rs be? Your DVDs? Memory cards? Zip disks? THEN you'll be sorry you got rid of your floppy drive. Don't say I didn't warn you.
