<< Did Al Gore invent the Internet?
According to a CNN transcript of an interview with Wolf Blitzer, Al Gore said,"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." Al Gore was not yet in Congress in 1969 when ARPANET started or in 1974 when the term Internet first came into use. Gore was elected to Congress in 1976. In fairness, Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf acknowledge in a paper titled Al Gore and the Internet that Gore has probably done more than any other elected official to support the growth and development of the Internet from the 1970's to the present.

Actually if I remember right the ARPANET was first proposed in the mid 50's but didn't really see the light of day until 1962. Actually came online sometime in the mid 60's I think. Back then of course it was just shared between 3 or 4 universities. It WAY predated Al Gore.

EDIT...found this link A Brief History of The Internet

It doesn't mention anything for the 1950's but I know I read something once about it first being proposed while Eisenhower was President.

Well,

Like they said, he did more than any other politician to foster the growth of the internet.

The problem was the semantics of his phrase. All these Repub Boobs jumped up and turned it into "I invented the internet", which he never said.

Face it, he did alot to help the web, and even places like this forum. It just singes the Repubs nutsack, so they do what they can to trash him.

What is really a shame are the stupid people who quote "I invented the Internet" for their pathetic little digs at the man, and at liberals.

It just shows how infantile they are. Republicans are simpletons. And the people "quoting" that fake phrase should just grow up. But they are Republicans, and are beyond help.

I know I am pissing off repubs here. They are looking in here, seeing that we aren't ripping on Al, and too afraid to follow that link because the truth might shatter their fragile egg-shell minds, so I am going to put the entire article in here, and bold the parts they need to read. Maybe we can put all the Al bashing to rest (at least in regards to the internet):

Al Gore was the first political leader to recognize the importance of the Internet and to promote and support its development.

No one person or even small group of persons exclusively "invented" the Internet. It is the result of many years of ongoing collaboration among people in government and the university community. But as the two people who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of time.

Last year the Vice President made a straightforward statement on his role. He said: "During my service in the United States Congress I took the initiative in creating the Internet." We don't think, as some people have argued, that Gore intended to claim he "invented" the Internet. Moreover, there is no question in our minds that while serving as Senator, Gore's initiatives had a significant and beneficial effect on the still-evolving Internet. The fact of the matter is that Gore was talking about and promoting the Internet long before most people were listening. We feel it is timely to offer our perspective.

As far back as the 1970s Congressman Gore promoted the idea of high speed telecommunications as an engine for both economic growth and the improvement of our educational system. He was the first elected official to grasp the potential of computer communications to have a broader impact than just improving the conduct of science and scholarship. Though easily forgotten, now, at the time this was an unproven and controversial concept. Our work on the Internet started in 1973 and was based on even earlier work that took place in the mid-late 1960s. But the Internet, as we know it today, was not deployed until 1983. When the Internet was still in the early stages of its deployment, Congressman Gore provided intellectual leadership by helping create the vision of the potential benefits of high speed computing and communication. As an example, he sponsored hearings on how advanced technologies might be put to use in areas like coordinating the response of government agencies to natural disasters and other crises.

As a Senator in the 1980s Gore urged government agencies to consolidate what at the time were several dozen different and unconnected networks into an "Interagency Network." Working in a bi-partisan manner with officials in Ronald Reagan and George Bush's administrations, Gore secured the passage of the High Performance Computing and Communications Act in 1991. This "Gore Act" supported the National Research and Education Network (NREN) initiative that became one of the major vehicles for the spread of the Internet beyond the field of computer science.

As Vice President Gore promoted building the Internet both up and out, as well as releasing the Internet from the control of the government agencies that spawned it. He served as the major administration proponent for continued investment in advanced computing and networking and private sector initiatives such as Net Day. He was and is a strong proponent of extending access to the network to schools and libraries. Today, approximately 95% of our nation's schools are on the Internet. Gore provided much-needed political support for the speedy privatization of the Internet when the time arrived for it to become a commercially-driven operation.

There are many factors that have contributed to the Internet's rapid growth since the later 1980s, not the least of which has been political support for its privatization and continued support for research in advanced networking technology. No one in public life has been more intellectually engaged in helping to create the climate for a thriving Internet than the Vice President. Gore has been a clear champion of this effort, both in the councils of government and with the public at large.

The Vice President deserves credit for his early recognition of the value of high speed computing and communication and for his long-term and consistent articulation of the potential value of the Internet to American citizens and industry and, indeed, to the rest of the world.

Ahh, now didn't that feel better? And how are you today Bober? ;)

No you moron. I know the real quote, I've known it longer than you have most likely. Like I said, it's a JOKE. Anyone who believes he said "I created the internet" is also a moron. What I'm saying is that BOTH sides take stupid little quotes/phrases/words and twist them around and over simplify them just to make little jabs...

Hmm, i've noticed something. It seems the republicans here spend a large quantity of their time attacking the democrats, trying to discredit them or taking credit for what they've done.

Is it because the republicans have only caused this country strife (*COUGH* Reagan and Bush administrations *COUGH*) that they feel the need to lambast 'the other party' in order to not look bad?

Have you ever noticed that politicians tend to exagerate the truth to improve their chances of getting elected. I used to think Texas was heaven on earth till I found out the curent gonernment there is undoing a lot of Bush stuf cause it don't woik. I think, from now on, I'm gonna take what they say cum grano salus.

[Begin Rant]

Gore is a pansy ass liberal, and the only people who like him are the other 5,000 pansy ass liberals.

Gore is a bullsh|tter. That is his job, just like the others before. All politicians are is bold faced liars. Whoever feeds you the biggest pile of crap, and gets you to believe it, becomes president. Republican, democrat, all of 'em. Gore is a poor democrat, because he talks before his brain has a chance to figure out what the hell he wanted to say. He goofed. When you watch him talk, it is like watching Homer Simpson. "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. ~Doh!~"

As for my political party, I am a republican. I like more of the ideals that the republican party tries to brainwash people into believing. I believe that welfare, worker's disability, and all other services such as this should be stopped. 99% of the people I know and see on it are freeloaders. If I have to work every day, then why should I have $200+ out of my paycheck each week taken for someone who has a bad back (One guy I know). If you don't wanna work, you starve, and of story. There are jobs out there that anyone, with ANY physical or mental disability can do. I believe sexual offenders should receive the death penalty (No questions asked). If you get caught stealing anything, you get the choice of losing three fingers or jail. Jail should be a place where you are put to WORK, not go to the gym, etc, and get better benefits than I do at my place of employment. I believe if you break into someone's house house, they should be allowed to shoot you (Which I will do anyway, law or not. You get caught breaking into my house, heh, you are gonna get your one time dose of vitamin L. Dance!) And I don't like gays, lesbians, fascists, or racists.

Those are my beliefs. I stand by them 100%

Gore made a stupid statement. It even seems a lot of times that he makes such statements *hoping* people will take them literally. In the above mentioned case, it's obvious that Gore did not "create" the internet, and sure he may have helped a minute, tiny amount, but he tries to make himself look better/more important than he is. I'm sure the internet would be just fine if Gore had never stepped foot into the political arena.

Oh, and the poll for this thread is completely biased. Where is the "No, but he helped a microscopic tiny bit" option?

You're absolutely right... but that's hindsight. He just goofed on a couple of words, don't tell me none of you guys have ever done that... i'm sure what he meant to say was he took the initiative in the progression of the internet (or something along that line). Come on, no idiot is going to claim they created the internet when such a factual statement can easily be verified.

Monel, I agree completely. But you forgot one thing, no one should be allowed to sue anyone because they are offended by something.
