Well i'm moving up to State College, PA in 2 weeks and I want to call ahead to one of these companies to get a high speed internet connection ready to be installed the day I move in, or activated before hand so its ready when I move in on the 23rd.

I've never had experience with EITHER of these high speed connections.

At home in Suburbs of Philadelphpia, we have only comcast. No DSL is available since I'm way too far from any DSL service.

Does anyone have experience with either one?

I couldn't find DSL up/down bandwidth from verizon's site, but maybe i'm just blind, and neither could I find this information from Adelphia's.

If DSL is at least 1.5/?? I'd go for it, unless Adelphia has an uncapped cable connection kind of like optimum online. A couple of my friends on optimum online get like 600 kiloBYTES down speed. That's just freaking nice!

So here's a poll on which you'd prefer.

BTW, If it wasn't obvious, i'm going to Penn State University (State College, PA)

Oh and I forgot to ask if anyone knows if Verizon offers any deals for DSL + 1 local phone line package. The apartment is for me and 3 roommates but we really only need/want 1 phone line for local calls only, not for calling parents, which would be long distance :)

Thanks
-y00y (comcast HATER, glad to be leaving a comcast area)

I've been with Adelphia since April of 2001. Excellent service, their e-mail servers were a little iffy at first, however things have been great for quite a while. On my downstream I average around 350-400 Kilobytes a sec with peaks at 800 to 900 Kilobytes a sec. My upstream is capped at 128k though. Naturally things very well may be different in PA so YMMV.

350-400 is deffinetely still better then my crummy 180 I get jipped for from comcast for over $40 a month, again I say, I HATE COMCAST!

Adelphia Cable High Speed Internet works fine for me. Down ~3mbps, Up 128k.

I use the service since September 1999 (formerly @Home, which used to be even faster) and did not have any problems at all this year except one downtime of 4 hours a few weeks ago when nobody in Colorado Springs had access to Adelphia Cable Internet.

My DSL from verizon is 1.5/128 for $34.95 a month. It hasn't been down once yet (knock on wood).

Been on Adelphia since Jan when Directv DSL went belly up.

When it works I get between 2.6 and 3.8 down but only 128 up.

Have had a lot of trouble with intermittant few minute outages and a few down multi day episodes. That said they seem to have cleared up the problems and I have noticed no problems for the last 6 weeks or so. Hopefully it was just a local problem.

They dont support routers either so if you have any trouble there you are on your own. Pretty standard practice though.

Good luck. Cant comment on Verizon DSL but I liked DSL better in general. Seemed much faster and never a problem for me. YMMV.

I live in WV in a college town "WVU". We have both options Adelphia and Verizon. Adelphia is faster for me I average 300-400 KB transfers" 2.5 mBit on bandwidth test sites. If you plan on living in an apartment complex I would recommend Verizon as DSL is a dedicated line for you no sharing like cable, but if you live out of town a little ways cable is the way to go. Check with your neighbors or classmates before you decide.
