[POLL] about when did you get a cellphone

I remember it was the last year of our senior year in college - 1999... my then gf got one for me and from that point on I became familiar with monthly fees. Yuck... but they're invaluable.

My parents have had one since 1993 (although technically it was a car phone). I got my own in 2001 or so.

1998, a gte wireless nokia ????(can't remember the model number but I did have a different color faceplate installed-black to silver). Kept it for 3 years or so. Then went without until a couple of years ago when I decided to carry one for emergencies only(both of my vehicles have more than 160,000 miles and started making me nervous about having a breakdown somewhere), so I got a tracfone nokia for a few months until I started getting collection agency calls(not for me as I never gave the number out to anyone) and some persistent telemarketers. So after using my remaining time, I switched over to an at&t motorola v173 go phone and that is my current phone.

My sister and I bought a "by the minute" cell phone (Tracfone or something like that) in the mid-90s, to share. We used maybe 200-300 minutes total, over the course of having it a couple of years. I got my own phone in late 2002 or early 2003, and have had one ever since.

Got mine in 2006 when I was in 11th grade. Got it to keep up with my then and still gf. Didn't have a need for one before that. Probably wouldn't afterwards if we were to unexpectedly split.

my parents got their first cellphone in 1996... since I commuted to high school, though, it was effectively mine -- my parents let me take it to school and whatnot in case of emergencies.

I relinquished it when I went off to college in 1999, and was cellphone-free after that till I got my first real job in 2004.

Right before my 19th birthday, so Christmas 2001. It was one of those phones where you pay as you go and had to put minutes on.

99, it was one of those starting to get thin nokias. my wife and i shared the one when we travelled, which was a lot back then.
