Everyone seems to be obsessed with AA/AF performance, and loads of people seem to use irt, so I was wondering how many people do use it/how often.

If you use it all the time where possible (ie: if you have a 9600Pro, you're not going to be able to use it much on Farcry).

Res/Lever of AA/AF doesn't matter, it's just whether you use it as much as you can.

Comments would be nice, such as do you drop the res so you can use it?

I'll start with 16x performance AF and 4X AA and back off from their. I'll take higher resolution over AA, and Framerate over IQ in FPS games.

I use it wherever possible, which isn't much. First, my card is older - so I have to choose, and I choose resolution & high detail settings over aa/af. Second, it's a gf4, which have a really hard time with aa/af. Maybe if they could do it with less of a performance hit I could do a little aa/af and get by with slightly lower detail settings.. but for the same resources it costs me, I can get a much better IQ increase from reso & detail settings.

I use 4xAA/8xAF all the time except on Diablo II where the game screen just goes FUBAR with it. Since my 9800 Pro can handle Far Cry at max details even with 4xAA/8xAF @ 1024x768, every other game should run very fast even with AA/AF and looks nicer somemore:) so I simply just left them on all the time.

All da time man. 2xAA for polish coupled with optimal monitor resolution and 8xAF for crispiness. I don't don't think 4x or 16x is worth it though.

Does it have NO2 to move such settings in that card?? You must be running @20fps....

With my average of 20 FPS on new games I don't see much AA or AF anymore :(
Can't wait for my 6800GT...

Call me crazy but, 25 fps is pretty acceptable to me. :)

After playing with 20 FPS for long enough, you just can't remember what good FPS were like, so it doesn't bother you anymore. At least that's how it is for me.

I used to played Half-life using software rendering @ 640x480 with a...Pentium MMX 233! The MP5 spewed 2 bullets per frame...That should give us the idea how fast it was. :)

I use 16x perfomance AF all the time (i.e. I turn it on once and never turn it off).

I only use AA for older games that won't run above 1600 x 1200.

I don't use cause I have NVidia cards which suck at it. I tell myself it don't matter like you.

AF looks much better on LCDs.

i always play at 1024z768 with 2x quincunx AA and 4xAF or 8xAF. used to use 4x when thats all i could run with decent rates, now that ive got a more powerfull system I max out the AF.

AA all the time, can't tell the difference between no af and af on except for the mipmap boundaries, i dont pay attention to how sharp the texture is really

I am always using AF, however I can't really use AA that much on a 9600XT.

I have seen slide shows on my computer that ran faster than that, but after playing Far Cry and trying to tweak my system I often asked myself how these people are able to say that they play it with everything maxed out on a 9800pro because I find it unplayable and my system isn't that bad.

as for AA and AF, I turned them off to play Halo and never turned them back on, I'm not sure if I have noticed it or not, games still lokk amazing, although there was one instance with a bush that looked like something out of an old NES game in Far Cry through the sniper scope, that was funny...and I might have missed it had I had AF and AA on.

I'm too into actually playing the game to tell the difference when AA/AF is on. I would MUCH rather have higher FPS, and not spend $400, than turn AA/AF on. That said, my 9600XT does survive "medium" AA/AF in FarCry 1024x768. I usually get about 55FPS with it turned off, and about 40 with it turned on. I turn it off when I really want to game, and on when I want to show off my graphics/monitor.

AA/AF in D2? A little overkill for an RPG I believe.
