Did you actually work towards and focus on the career you have now, or just kind of end up doing it?

For those in school, do you have a career in mind, or are you just hoping something cool comes up?

There is a POLL vote in it :|

Maetryx here,

I'm a civil engineer that is doing environmental engineering. Environmental engineering is tightly related to civil engineering. You can't *be* a professional engineer without planning it that way, since it takes a 4-year degree and after 4 years of experience you have to pass an 8-hour exam. Most professional jobs you can't get by happenstance (doctors, attorneys, engineers, pro-football players, astronauts, accountants).

Don't you have to pass 2 exams to become a professional engineer? Maybe it varies by state? I took the EIT exam (easily the hardest test I've ever taken!) and still need 4 years of experience (or 3 w/ grad school) and then another exam before I could become a professional engineer.

To Sluggo: The cool jobs usually don't fall into your lap, you've got to go out and get them.

growing up as a kid, i had this idea i was going to be doing something in computers one way or another and it was great to get my feet wet with basic and pascal and all that good stuff. after college and programming for 6 years (4 in college, 2 in high school), i think i hated it and that's when i started to do IT stuff. couple of years into it, it's still interesting to me and i am actively working towards a discipline in IT (security hopefully). yes, i am certified up the ass, but all this is with all the time i put into the test lab i have as well so i will back up what i say (most... there's just too much information to know sometimes). between secuirty of servers, networks and systems, i don't know how much stuff i read already. i guess i'll see where this leads me in the next couple of years.

i know security is lots of fun since you have to actually keep up to date on a daily basis (which i do anyways, so no big deal :))

Very focused and determined, but also had a bit of luck in moving up in the world.

I am a first year in college and for a long time I thought I wanted to be a doctor, now I just hope something comes along. Maybe i wil be a teacher and an entrapreneur on the side. That sounds the best to me so far.
