The 6800 GT seems to be a bit cheaper and also comes with Farcry, so I'd go that way. Other than Farcry I can't think of a game where the x800 Pro has a significant advantage, while the GT will be slightly faster in many games.

I would most definitly get the 6800 GT. those Ati drivers are still buggy, I don't care if you can unlock the pipes or not.

Other than that, the X800pro, you get better AA.

LOL, nice. :)

That is great...i've seen it linked before, but never bothered to watch it

I think it's pretty clear what card to buy after seeing this poll :)

I'd still go with the GT even vs the XT Vivo. You can get a GT for like 385 but the XT is still like 464... I already have a TV card so I don't need vivo

I'd go ATI all the way personally - a nice, shiny new 9200SE (the one with crippled 64-bit DDR). Make it PCI while we're at it.

That oughta handle Doom3 and HL2 like a champ ;) .

Although the Voodoo Banshee does give all the above a run for their money!

6800GT - a real no brainer of a choice at the moment due to the 16 pipes and in most cases can be clocked to Ultra levels and beyond

heh.. speaking of "no brainer"....

there's a big misconception and too much importance put on the # of pipes; pipes mean nothing when taken out of context from the rest of the architecture. the "12pipe" PRO edging out the "16 pipe" GT in farcry (among other d3d titles) with aa/af, or the "12pipe" vanilla 6800 keeping pace for the most part with the "16pipe" XT in doom3 are recent examples.

interstingly, with recent driver revisions, the GT edges out the PRO in avg fps on several far cry maps, but the PRO edges out the GT in both min/max FPS:

Far Cry 1280x1024
Card......................Min FPS......Max FPS
XT PE.........................54.5.............134
X800 PRO...................40.7..........102.7
6800 Ultra..................44.8..........104
6800 GT.....................38.7...........92.8

granted, it's not a huge difference, but neither is the GT's advantage over the PRO im most cases (D3 being the glaring exception). i'd still like to see more comparisons including the min & max fps when reviewing hardware tho, and i'm not sure why FS only posted the numbers for 1280...

that being said, the PRO's performance in Doom3 compared to the GT is embarassing, but that hs nothing to do with the # of pipes; while the ultra & GT attain 60fps @ 1600x1200 4xaa/8xaf, the XTPE is can't quite reach 40fps, and the PRO can't quite reach 30fps...

the PRO is more than playable @1280, but my GT runs just as well @ 1600... imo Doom3 perf. is an embarassment for ati, 12 pipe or not...

It's not that clear-cut, is it? X800Ps can go for as little as $330 with a semi-regular Dell sale (tho I haven't seen one lately), GTs tend to stick around $400 (but with decent game bundles), and now the plain XT is available for $460.

So, really, it's up to you to seek out benchmarks in the games you play to determine which to buy.

But you probably want the easy answer, right? At the prices I listed, I'd probably have to go with the X800P. But if there're no magical sales around, it's a tough call between a GT and XT. Depending on the bundle, the GT is probably a better bang/buck choice (especially for more OGL [iD/Bioware] games) than the XT, but that's a closer call.

Great link, Blastman. :D

OK! I have some very personal experience with this so
I thought I might share my humble opinions...

I did the following:

1. Bought a ASUS X800 Pro
2. Sold the ASUS X800 Pro after one week
3. Bought a Leadtek 6800 GT the day after

(nerd or what?)

Why? Because the ASUS X800 Pro I bought wasn't a VIVO and
hence wasn't unlockable through rom-flashing.
(the first non-VIVO examples were unlockable through hard-modding
and rom-flashing - but no more. Or only in rare cases and then no
one knows why)

Now - a X800 Pro VIVO unlocked and OC:ed to match a ultra might
be a very nice thing but it would still be a modded card...

My 6800 GT I can crank up to 412mhz (from 350 standard) if I so desire.
(yes - I have played with this for more than 30 min. worked like a beauty)
This is a non-moddified card! I keep it running at 380 regulary to
avoid stressing it too much and at this speed it IS faster than the
X800 Pro I had when that was OC:ed.

Ok - this was perhaps a bit much but my simple recommendation is that
if you don't want to gamble too much with your dosh by modding, then a
mildly OC:ed 6800 GT is a very solid perfomer and better than the
X800 Pro. At least IMO since I actually changed and think it was for
the better!

Did you play any games before and after to see a differance? Or did you go only on the fact that you could overclock the 6800 more?

Another thing, why the x800pro haten? I would go with whatever one was cheaper imo. Both great cards.

ok - don't get me wrong. the X800 pro is a GREAT card.
especially the ASUS since it has an extra silent fan.

The *real* reason I changed was because a friend of mine
got near identical scores in DOOM3 with his 9800 pro and
the ATI-mod for D3 that is floating around. That really was
a bit much since my X800 was more than twice as expensive
as his card...

I did some research and found that it would seemed likely that
HL2 would run great on the 6800 GT as well. Or at least it
would run "more than ok". And since I wasn't happy with
the D3 performance a change seemed logical since I didn't
wanna try a hard-mod/rom-flash on my week-old X800...

Unfortunately I didn't try aquamark with the X800 but I did
play Far Cry with both cards and there I found that the
mildly OC:ed 6800 GT outperformed the the "max-OC:ed"
X800. On settings from 1024x768 up to 1280x960 with
everything on max. Not much - but around 0-4 fps.
Then - of course - in D3 there is no doubt about it.

In some strange way though it feels more "unstressed"
than the X800. I got the impression that during gameplay
the X800 had "high peaks but lower valleys of fps". If you
get my drift. This is very subjective of course. But to me
it feels like the 6800 GT is better at tackling those short
burst of extremely complex graphics with multiple enemies/
massive explosions etc.

Or to get to the core of the issue:

Doom3 runs MUCH better on a 6800 GT
HL2 will *likely* run just as well or marginally worse on a 6800 GT

and.... the 6800 GT is less expensive

plus the 6800 GT has shader 3.0 which could help make it more
future proof and up the performance further in the future.

But... they are both great cards. I wouln't have changed if I
wasn't so dissapointed with the D3 performance.
