I think China will prolly get it this time. Last time they were only 1-2 vote from winning. But later found out some country cheated.

But the I guess no one thought Sydney's Olympic went through so smoothly and perfectly.

Hmmm, my real vote goes for Rio de Janeiro. And yes, it is a candidate for the 2008 Olympics.

As a Torontonian, I do not want the Olympics in 2008. Our mayor went and lied to the Olympic committee and told them that we had 75% of the facilities ready. WTF? If you include the University of Toronto's athletic facilities in addition to those of York, Ryerson and the many community colleges into the equation...the Sky Dome, Air Canada Centre, and any other stadiums we have more like 20% of the facilities ready. We're going to end up footing the bill and I just can't see us recouping the costs...plus the Greater Toronto Area which would largely host the Olympic events has some of the worst urban sprawl in all of North American in my opinion and our transportation infrastructure couldn't handle the tourists.

Go Beijing!

Eug,

You talking about Queen's Quay?

All my friends and I went do to the waterfront to watch the fireworks New Years Eve 2000! One of my friends and I, climbed up into a tree and started swinging it back in forth (it almost snapped). We had the best view there, there must have been over a million people there!

Even though China is a totalitarian goverment, I'd rather have Beijing win than Toronto. I mean, what's so unique about Toronto.

-Toronto is extremely diverse, and so are the Olympics!

-Great facilties down by the water -- CN Tower (tallest structure in the world), Sky Dome (another engineering milestone), Air Canada Centre (great for indoor stuff), and all of these places are within a 10 minute walk!

-Not as crowded or overly-populated as Beijing or Osaka.

-Toronto deserves it! Canada should be on the Olympic map again... I mean Calgary and Montreal were the last two in Canada, and those were AGES ago!

-Not AS polluted as 3.) and 5.).

I personally hope that Beijing would win but it seems unlikely. Well, it's not impossible but just the way it is now...... unlikely. This is the order of cities of which I think would win:

1.) Paris
2.) Beijing
3.) Istanbul
4.) Toronto
5.) Osaka

(1 = most likely to be selected)

Toronto, not because I like Canada, but because I want to see the events live and not on some stupid ass tape delay.

Maybe they should make their decision based on our poll....at least we're not corrupted like the Olympic Committee. :)

I think that if the 2006 games are in Asia then Toronto will get it but if the 2006 is in North America then Beijing will get it. I hope Toronto gets it because then my home town Vancouver will not get the 2010 winter games.

2002- Salt Lake City, USA
2004- Athens, Greece
2006- any decision yet???
2008- depending on were the 2006 games are.

Cheers,

i just moved out of Toronto, it's a great city, and i don't wanna see it being destroyed by the olympics.
Beijing is a city under development, they need a chance like this to improve all the facilities.

Until there is a commitment from the developers, that they will absorb any cost overruns and from the trade unions that they will not strike during any construction, I will not support the Toronto Olympic bid. I have no confidence or trust in John ?Hoops? Bitove Jr. and his entourage. They are the exact same consortium that gave us SkyDome.

Anywhere but Toronto? please.

<< You talking about Queen's Quay? >>

Yes. Continued development there will drive up the value of my home (very close by) quite nicely. :) But like I said, I'm not biased... ;)

Huh? There are never any guarantees for anything, unless you live in a country like China. However, I agree that serious negotiating needs to be done to better support the bid.

Personally, I think Toronto is in need for some major development, which would include many infrastructure improvements that would not only serve the games, but also benefit the population here. It's interesting to note that if there are cost overruns, the provincial gov't has already stated they'd pick up the slack. Sure, we're still paying for it, but I think they realize that this is a great opportunity to seriously upgrade the city and surrounding areas, and at the same time introduce ourselves to the rest of the world in a big way. With proper planning, this could seriously be pulled off successfully.

Edit

<< 2006 Winter Games will be held in Sion, Switzerland. >>

Eh? It's in Turin, Italy, exactly 50 years after its last Olympics.

Edit again

Oops, I see you caught that...
