Polk or Infinity Primus? Need a clue

As I'm in the process of replacing some very very old cheap speakers I'm trying to find the best bang for my buck. I'm trying to stay below $500 for the mains, and center. I'm also going to need a sub sometime soon as well. I have a 5 year old sony 5.1 reciever which works great, but will be replaced here down the line.
 
I've read some good reviews. Acoustech is a part of BIC, which are definitely not white van speakers.


edit: actually, those are "acoustic." I don't know why I read it as acoustech, which is part of BIC and very good speakers. They may be crap, but look on AVS or any other HT forum about the sub, it gets very good ratings.

The room itself is roughly 25feet long and 13.5 feet wide. This includes the "dining room" area which about 10feet.

The speakers I have are a pair of old non-labeled yamaha mains. A pioneer center and pioneer rear speakers.

Brand is actually Premier Acoustics... I wonder if these guys will object to it

so the viewing area is 15x14 or so?

I believe the rule for surrounds is high and to the sides for 5.1.

Back wall placement would be rear surround channels is correct in a 7.1 setup, I think.

I assume you would want tower mains? what is your constraint on centre? are you mounting it above the display?

I'm leaning towards the tower mains... The centre would be just below the TV, as it's a DLP and doesn't have much room above it.

Are you set on Polk and Infinity? I have a Polk setup, but I wouldn't have bought it if I hadn't gotten a great deal on everything. I bought 2 R50 mains, a CSi25 center, and 2 R15 surrounds for $350 shipped. I think it's very much worth it at that price, but not worth it at the regular prices. I'm not sure if there are any great deals out there right now, but definitely don't buy the Polk stuff at the above-listed prices. Now excuse me while I dust off my speaker knowledge:
The Primus has a larger Frequency response than the Polks - most like due to the two 6.5" woofers, 4" driver and 3/4" tweeter vs the 2 6.5 woofers and 1" tweeter of the Polk. The Primus has a higher sensitivity which, IIRC, means they are easier to drive (require less power from your receiver)

I heave heard a similar model of Polks and they sounded nice. Not great but nice. For me, I would go with Infinity Primus over the Polks in the same price range

Something else to keep in mind...Polk's are typically a little warmer and not as bright as the Infinity. You can correct it with your receiver to some extent, and some poeple dont mind. But something to keep in mind.
 
On newegg right now you can get 2 x Polk Monitor 50s + 1x CS1 for $290, or upgrade to Monitor 60s for $390.

You can also get 2x Klipsch F-1 + 1x C-1 for $500. Either would be a pretty good deal, but personally, I'd prefer the Klipsch because of larger woofer and brighter sound.

I'm not too familiar with the Primus line but it seems getting those would be over your $500 budget.

I'm not really set on anything so much. These are the two that everyone at work kept talking about, and they were in the General Home Theater Audio Thread so I figured they had to be good.

Not exactly sure when I'll be picking all this up. With in the next month or so I'm sure.

I think 2 Monitor 60s plus a CS2 for $430 would be a nice combo although I haven't heard them first hand. I've heard that the CS2 is a really nice upgrade over the CS1, and I would think that it would be the same with the Monitor 60s.

OK, I actually just looked at the specs, and it seems that there's not much difference between the Monitor 50 and 60. Also, the CS1 will match the the Monitor 50/60, and the CS2 will match the Monitor 70. 2 Monitor 70s and a CS2 would run you $590. I'm sure that would be a great front sound stage, but I'm not sure how they'd compare to other brands at that price.

OP, if you do consider the Klipsch speakers, please audition them first. A lot of people dislike bright speakers.
