Well, the word is on AVS forum, that Polk subs are not so hot. However, their other speakers are pretty good. I have Polk Monitor 70's and 60's but I bought an EDS subwoofer.

A hunderd-dollar sub is tough to beat! However, I have been researching subs for the past two weeks, and what I've found is that most everything below $400 is a "toy" sub. The only exceptions I've found are these:

1) Bic/Acoustech Cinema Series H100. Go to http://www.acousticsounddesign.com/ and make then an offer above $200 (I did $205; some say as low as $190) and get it with free shipping too. There is also a Bing cashback for them, but not sure if it works with the "make an offer" thang.

2) next up is the cheapest "real" sub in most reviewers opinions. Elemental Design's A2-300 sub for $350. Was Free Shipping last week, not sure now. http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_info.php?t=2&products_id=407

Either should work fine with your receiver, I'd say. There are a million sub choices and ten million opinions on subs, but these seem the best bang that I've been able to find. Most say that the eD sub will rock with almost anything below $1000 (at least for home-theater applications), but for music ymmv.

Wandering OT here:

By and large, you don't get music-quality bass response from cheap Subs. You can get subs that THWUMP loadly for your HT soundtracks, but all the technical reviews I've read describe these inexpensive ones as "muddy". I've a decade-old Yamaha that fits exactly, so I'm looking for a replacement.

I'm impressed with reviews of the Hsu Research Subs'. They have two interesting items on sale at the moment: the VTF-1 ($441 in black, $481 in maple) and the STF-1 ($298 in black). That's more than I'm enthusiastic about paying, but it seems to be the entry price for getting quality low-frequency reproduction (25Hz for the VTF-1, 32Hz for the STF-1). Reviewers do test these on movie soundtracks, and have commented on the increased realism of explosions and crashes, and the increased clarity of effects such as low-freq' mechanical noises. But these are not sold for the joy of loudness, and there are better purchases if you just want a heavy bass sound.

The Polk is at a great price But if loud volume and low price don't cover your list of requirements -- if you're interested in great reproduction of cellos and pipe organs as well as especially clear HT support -- a pricier rig may be a better purchase when you can afford it.

Not only on AVS forum, but that sub has the same reputation on Polk's own forum, too.

Personally, Hsu and Velodyne are the two brands I'd consider first.....own a Velodyne myself.

Elemental Designs makes 14 subs, ranging from $325 to $2,500. I'm guessing that some are more for theater use while others are more for high fidelity.
