Political divide at it's highest?

Today was like most mornings at school, and on my way to class, I picked up our school newspaper, the Daily Pennsylvanian Link. Well, if you read that article, it's pretty crazy that a kid from Wharton (#1 undergrad business school in the world) would do something this bad.

My question is, has the political divide become so great that we have to kick our fellow Americans because we disagree with them. In this case, the situation wasn't as simple as a disagreement, but there are other cases where similar events (on all sides) have taken place.

If we can't all agree, can't we just have reasonable debate? What do you guys think is the cause of this?

Simple?.Both sides of the political spectrum honestly believe that their candidate doesn't blow goats....being that both of them are equally wrong....they get very angry and frustrated when their poster child, political spokesman, isn't making any leeway amongst other Americans.

This obviously upsets them?.

Thoughts turn into emotion...emotion turns to hostility...hostility turns to anger.....Then one September evening a goofy ass Aids activist, or smug 3 year old, gets the silliness smacked down on them by a disgruntled union Demonrat/ or elitist Repuklican.

Election year turns full circle?..

If the majority of this forum's members are any indication, people get offended any time someone suggests that they might not have all the answers on a political issue. This usually results in a string of personal attacks, insults, and other idiocy, but rarely results in debate. Apparently, debate is just too much work anymore.

Uh, No?

Anyone remember the Brooks-Sumner incident, which illustrated the level of tensions leading up to the Civil War, for example? I think when that stuff starts occurring on the Senate floor you may have a case, but picking out isolated incidents of individuals acting moronically in emotionally driven political rallies or protests is hardly justification for "the sky is falling" rhetoric.

I picked out only one incident, but tensions are pretty high at my university. We seem to be doing a good job at controlling ourselves in terms of violent actions, but there are incidents where people just stop talking simply as a result of political differences. Shouting matches are not infrequent, and there is a reluctance on both sides to listen to the other side's argument w/o bitterness.

Is this common or am I just crazy?

Oh yea, i don't remember anyone challenging people to duels in the last election.

Charge the guy who fired the gunshot with attempted murder. Charge the puncher and the shover at this incident with assault. Same with the headlock guy. Do all that, then do what you want to the kicker. It's only fair.

What gives you the idea that I don't believe that? I said in my previous post to charge all of the violent Dems if you are going to charge Scott.

You are SO partisan that you believe he was defending himself... it is hard to listen to anything you say after that.
