On a personal note I saw for the first time in action Dept Of Homeland Security.

At a local Boat show they cruised the river with an awesome boat powered by 675 HP

3 225HP Engines across the back of this thing, they can literally fly across the water. The boat was well manned with at least 8 guys on it.

It had Department Of Homeland Security in huge Black letters on the sides and a large logo on each side of the wheelhouse.

So saw our Tax dollars at work for a change.

10-18-2004 Police Show Strain From Endless Terror Alerts

The latest round of 12-hour shifts for the Capitol Police began after Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge raised the alert level in August for financial institutions in New York, Washington and Newark.

The continual elevated terror alerts have meant weeks and weeks of 12-hour shifts, little vacation and fewer days off.

"The officers are extremely fatigued. They're really stressed out," said U.S. Capitol Police Officer Andy Maybo, chairman of the police union, which did not organize or support the action.

It's not just the Capitol Police. All across the country, but especially in Washington and New York, police officers and federal agents say the heightened alert and the strain of working long hours with no end in sight are taking their toll.

Experts on policing, police chiefs and the officers themselves wonder whether the law enforcement agencies can sustain the current staffing levels without a general change in policy by government agencies that would provide some financial and manpower relief.

How easily we forget that while the Admin is conveniently changing the terror alerts at will these folks are slaving away behind the scenes. :(

And there are fewer of them, too, thanks to much-extended tours of duty for Guardsman and Reservists (some of whom were our first-responders) and Bush cutting the budget for fire and police.
