I back up aggressively into a parking spot at the front of a gas station once and the attendant inside honestly thought I was there to rob the place. Said that's how people park when they are going to rob it.

Didn't the OP say he had the owner's permission?

Is every cop who sees people outside a business suppose to call for backup in order to protect society from loiterers?

Do they have to be assholes when they do it, too?

I think your sarcasm meter is broken.

And no, the OP didn't have the owner's permission, just the attendant's.

Then you really don't understand the US. It's because the cops here get blamed when two guys pull into a gas station, buy a box of pop tarts, finish them off outside while waiting for other customers to clear out before going back in and sticking a gun in the clerk's face. And when they do finally catch a real criminal, they're brought in front of the court to defend themselves because someone thought they were too aggressive when wrestling the knife out of the guy's hand.

Spending a half hour eating pop tarts next to a gas station is NOT NORMAL. It's suspicious. That's why they were hassled.

Since when is chilling by a gas station suspicious? I used to do it all the time when I was a kid.

Even if the cops were justified in pulling over, they don't have to be dicks about it. Like the OP said, 5 of them were nice, but 1 was an asshole. I find that 1 to be inexcusable.

The OP had the owner's permission to relax outside. What if the OP was the owner's friend/relative, or even the owner himself. Wouldn't it be kind of annoying to be berated by a pissed off police officer for relaxing outside an establishment?

There are few thing worse than an asshole police officer.

You may have done it all the time when you were a kid, and you were loitering. Loitering is illegal in many areas of the US.

I said it before and I'll say it again. Eating pop tarts outside a gas station for over a half hour is not normal. If you don't understand how that's suspicious, maybe you need to look up the word in a dictionary. If your actions inspire suspicion in someone, your actions are suspicious. It's as simple as that.

This. Back in high school me and a girlfriend were chilling at a park one night on the hood of my car, about to make out, nothing illegal. A cop drove by and gave us a bit of trouble, and I was pretty pissed at the time. Looking back on it though I totally understand why he had to check us out. Two kids, at night, in an empty park, not doing anything. Yeah, definitely suspicious.

If you're doing sketchy shit, you shouldn't be surprised if a cop pulls you over or checks you out.

If eating pop tarts and drinking coffee outside a gas station is suspicious, you are paranoid. It's as simple as that.
Maybe cops need a couple of months off every year to de-stress, like teachers?

Come on, two dudes sitting in a car, eating, at night, at a gas station? For all the cops know these two clowns could be casing the place and getting ready to rob it. I'm not the biggest fan of the police, but even I have to say that they were in the right.

That's the society we're living in. You're naive if you think otherwise. That is exactly the kind of behavior many people exhibit before they rob a place. They go inside to case it out... find out how many people are working. Buy something so they appear to be a regular customer. Wait outside for a while and watch who goes in and comes out to make sure there's nobody in there they feel could threaten them. When they get the nerve and are comfortable that there's nobody inside to thwart their plans, they go back inside and rob the place.

*EDIT* Lemme ask you this... if your wife, sister, mother or daughter were the cashier... maybe even the only person tending to the gas station at that particular time and there were two guys hanging around outside eating pop tarts and talking, would you be 100% comfortable with the safety of your loved one inside tending to a few hundred to a thousand or more dollars in cash by themselves?

Okay, they were acting suspiciously, but if they had the attendants permission to do it, what is the issue?

The cops over-reacted.

How would the cops know they had the attendants permission if they didn't investigate? What difference would that make anyway? Dealing drugs with the attendants permission is still illegal.

It must be a common occurance in the US for drug dealers to munch on Pop Tarts whilst dealing drugs.

Edit: And running the license plates of the cars would show them to be drug dealers?

Plates -> Registration -> Name -> Check for past arrests

Think for a second before you post.

Come on, you can't really be THAT dense, can you? It has nothing to do with pop tarts specifically and everything to do with abnormal behavior. Pop Tarts, Cheetos, Sun Chips, cheese and crackers, oatmeal, waffles and chicken... whatever it is, it's not normal to have a picnic outside a gas station for a half hour.

And no, running the plates wouldn't show them to be drug dealers, but it would tell them whether they've been reported stolen. And speaking to the individuals would allow the cops to make a decision based on their experience whether or not they were involved in criminal activity.

Calling for backup would not be unusual, either. How far do you think you'll get going one-on-one with someone hopped up on drugs and not feeling pain?
