Police Officer Assaults Handcuffed Woman; Cuts, Bruises, Black Eyes, Broken Teeth

Video of the incident is on the website as well. The officer was manhandling the woman after he cuffed her and failed to get backup when the woman was uncooperative. Then he turned off the video recorder (I wonder why?); when he turns it back on the woman is lying on the floor in a large pool of her own blood.

The officer's explanation was:

"The suspect again tried to leave the room. In the process of stopping her, she fell and injured herself."
How the heck do you fall and give yourself multiple facial bruises, cuts, two black eyes and two broken teeth? Maybe if you fell out of a second story window.

The officer was fired, not for assault, but for 'mishandling' the woman before the incident. He was aggressive before he turned off the camera, and definitely unloaded on her face after he knew nobody was watching.

The officer is currently appealing the decision to fire him.

As for the woman, I think she already had a few lawyers at her doorstep after the Good Morning America segment aired. Time to cash in courtesy of dumb ass Po-Po.

Whats with all the police officers beating up suspects and civilians recently? Stressed out at the general incompetence of the populace, or does it just end up on film more often since everyone carries a cell phone camera?

Yep mostly cameras and tech is cheap enough to put in cars, police houses, etc... This happened before but without cameras they would just think oh cop vs anybody else. Think what the police/court would have said if that kid that was told he could be charged with anythig and the cop would make it stick if he had not recorded it.

Of course one state went on to ban taping of police. I whonder why.

Bad apples are getting caught...its not like its a widespread problem. Some people just don't belong, but jpeyton has a hardon for cops I guess, as it seems to be his mission, to find everything wrong with the police and never point to the positives.

EDIT: Since people like to overreact, I reworded it to clarify.

Cops should set an example regardless, not do this crap... And I bet your opinion would be different if this woman was your wife

But I dont have anything agaisnt cops, I just have something against people that think they are superior just because of their social status

How is my opinion any different from yours? Perhaps you misunderstood...the problem isn't as widespread as the media makes it out to be. The bad apples are getting caught, thats a good thing. I have no problem with bad cops being fired, but I do have a problem with the witch hunt that tends to happen around here.

EDIT: Btw, this thread is in the wrong forum.

yes, jpeyton, these are bad police officers. the woman deserved none of this treatment.

I'd say is a big fucking problem. Did you see the photos of the woman? NO CHARGERS WERE FILED. This is a BIG fucking corruption problem.

Nice. Way to read the thread there.

I'll agree with this. NYC alone has about 36,000 officers. You hear about one incident like this, nationwide, per month. Obviously there are some you don't hear about, but that ratio seems pretty damned low.

Bad apples need to be pulled out, whether they make sensational news or not, but people like the OP and first poster running around with chips on their shoulders don't make decent cops' jobs any easier.

Well, she was cuffed with her hands behind her back. If she fell face first on that hard tile floor with the way she was jumping around, I can very easily see injuries like that occurring. She was jumping around and being very uncooperative. Not to mention she was sh!t faced. It's very plausible her injuries were from a face first fall.

I fell face first once in the playground in 5th grade and my injuries looked very much like that. I've also seen many other people who have had face first falls with nothing to break the fall and her injuries are consistent with theirs. Broken teeth are consistent with hitting a hard surface. A beating may knock teeth out, but it doesn't break them like a fall on a hard surface does.

And the camera being turned off IS policy when a suspect refuses to take the Breathalyzer. She refused, and the officer turned off the camera. The camera is only there to record the test. ABC explained this policy. So the assumtion that he turned it off to beat her is absurd. He turns it off when she refuses to be tested.

So there IS reasonable doubt that the officer beat her. I'm not saying he didn't, only that his story is plausible.

Actually, I find the immediate assumtion that the officer is guilty very disturbing.

There are bad apples in every good fruit basket. One such incident does not reflect upon all cops. IMHO most cops are good, honest law abiding public employees, who must be given all the respect.

I sure do miss you and your step back and take a real look logic when you aren't around.

Let's not forget that she isn't innocent here. She was booked for drunk driving and is obviously resisting in the tape. Don't put it past people to injure themselves jail in holding in jail to try to make a buck. I've seen guys beat the living hell out of themselves and claim police brutality, but when they're told it was on tape they shut up.

She probably noticed the officer turning it off and took a nose dive at the floor.

I like how almost everyone here immediately says the officer was at fault, and all police are shit, even though they don't know the specifics. You just judge based on your own misguided beliefs.

Thanks. I just find the rush to judgement by so many to be very disturbing. Honestly, what if the cop did not beat her? His life is ruined now... for nothing.

Not that it's really any of my business, but I have a very hard time seeing how one could possibly sustain injuries like that from one fall.
Especially the blue eyes, getting both of them beaten that badly would pretty much require you to fall twice, once on each side, unless you fell hard enough to more or less flatten your face out, in which case your black eyes would probably be the least of your concerns.
Besides, I saw some color picture of her, she pretty much looks like a raccoon, I don't really see how any fall could cause that unless some convex object was involved.

Broken teeth and nose both sound perfectly reasonable for a fall like that though.

Actually, a fall squarely on the face WILL blacken both of your eyes. Hell, just a broken nose or a hard hit on the lower forehead will often do that. I know when I fell I had a broken nose, a huge bump on my lower forehead and two VERY black eyes.

One does not need to be hit directly in the eye for it to blacken like that.

In fact, look at pictures of most nose job patients in the first days after surgery. Almost all will have two black eyes.

Example:

http://www.alisondale.com/grap...dale_rhinoplasty02.jpg

And this is after a controlled breaking of the nose. Imagine the blackness after hitting a hard floor in a face first fall.

Folks, her injuries are NOT inconsistent with an unbroken face first fall. Not at all.

Charges will almost certainly be filed, given the evidence.

Just because they haven't been filed yet, does not mean they won't be.

She will also get a large payment from the civil case.
