Police checkpoints: Do they ever check for registration and insurance?

All the police checkpoints I've been through only asked to see my driver's license. A few have asked if I've been drinking but that's it. No asking to see my registration or proof of insurance. Do they just not do this or what?

yes, they will

On what terms? I've been through 5 or 6 so far and none have asked for them?

I've been through two and they've checked mine both times. I wasn't saying that they always do, but the will do it. Probably trying to get people through the checkpoint or just different departments, different protocol.

I've been through several drunk-driving checkpoints, and they have asked for registration and proof of insurance every time...

I was stopped at a checkpoint on my way to bestbuy to buy some blanks... I had ~30 min to get there, so I was in a hurry.

I told the cop I was in a hurry and this is bvllshit how he stopped me, he checked my license, registration, insurance and made me wait like 20 minutes.

So yeah, I guess they do ask you. LOL

Interesting, well where I live in Illinois they do then 😀 But I've also never been asked for my registration in this state either.

Probably just depends on the situation/cop/department/day.

I've been through ones where they just shine the flashlight in my eye and ask me if I've been drinking. Had some where they just asked for license and some for both. I figure sometimes its a higher-traffic area and want to check the cars for something in particular and don't have time for drivers to go digging into their glove compartments.

but I'm a longhair.
Me too. I not only get stopped at regular checkpoints and asked, but have also been stopped for "suspicious behaviour".....whatever that is. After the second stop by the same State Trooper along the same stretch of road, I refused to let him search the car. He didn't care for that response and commotion ensued. There were 5 State cars, with dogs, with me handcuffed over the hood of my car, within 3 minutes.
After a short discussion and a quick run-around by the dogs, it was decided I wasn't a serial killer/drug runner/Hitlers son/fugative and should be released.
It took a discussion between the trooper, his commander, my lawer and me to decide there was no need for me to be stopped in the future for "suspicious behaviour".

Ya nakedfrog, I know where you're commin' from.

In NY State, they can scan your car, before they exit the Police Car,
and know if your plates, etc are still current.

Also in NY;
the registration sticker is on the windshield,
along with the Inspection sticker,
so at road checks they are easy to see if Valid.

Seat belts are another thing to wear, for less hassles,
as well as your safety.

I've been asked for registration & proof of insurance in NY State a couple times, but otherwise the only stops I've been through have been DWI-checkpoints & they never even asked to see my license.

In Texas, they don't have to ask for registration, its on the windshield. I have been asked for my insurance though.

in georgia you are not required to have proof of insurance. the law changed a couple of years ago since the cops have access to that info via computer.

In Indiana we get asked for license and registration. Insurance info is on the registration card so they never ask for it separately.
