Police cars have way to many bright a$$ lights

OutHouse

holy crap, my county went ape shit crazy with the amount of bright ass strobe lights on the police cars. you got the light bar with its 100 gazillion candle power red white and blue strobes blinding the shit out of you as you drive past but then lets add strobes in the grill, the headlights, wig-wags, the parking lights the, side mirrors and a couple on the side of the car between the front and back door. Oh and lets not forget the strobes in the tail lights, the flashing reverse lights and the rear of the light bar. If that is still not enough lets add in not one but two spotlight's that are also used on 747's as a landing lights.

Steven Spielberg could have used my county's police cars as UFO's in Close Encounters. shit is way over kill

I have to agree they can be annoying at night, all lit up like a carnival ride. But, even with all that bright light, stopped cop cars are still hit by other drivers, err, point-and-hope steerers.

Flashing lights attract drunks. having all those flashing lights like a rolling rock concert is a lot less safe than just having your 4ways on.

I agree. They're dazzling, especially when you get a couple together. It's unnecessary.

Considering they're blinding for those sensitive to light (say due to chronic migraines) that doesn't surprise me at all.

I wish they could dim them once they got the guy pulled over. Nothing sucks worse than turning a corner and being blinded. And of course if I hit the cop then its automatically my fault. No arguing that one in court.

I've been noticing lately that there is a new light they are putting on Fire Engines in my area now that is obnoxious too. If you look at it from the right angle it's blinding. It looks like a really high power led, I'm not sure what it's for but it's on each side and the back, and it's solid, not blinking. These lights are on even when they are not on a call and they don't have any other emergency lights on, so I'm not sure what they are used for.

I was switching lanes behind a truck the other day, and my eyes caught it at the right angle, and it actually left a shadow spot in my eye for a few seconds, like when you shine a flashlight directly in your eye and look away.

I agree, it is hard to safely drive pass them now when they have pulled someone over or are blocking off an accident.

I gotta agree with this. I passed a guy pulled over for speeding or something at night awhile back and I'm not exaggerating...I was close to completely blind due to all the god damn lights on a cop car. I was crawling along trying not to seize out and worrying some one behind me was going to ram into my ass since they were likely just as blind as me.

I can tell none of you guys have ever been a cop or even done ride alongs.

The more lights the better now people cannot say "I didnt see you"

Those little gumdrops they have on Euro Police cars are a joke.

There's a line between being able to see them and "OH MY GOD I'M FUCKING BLIND!" The blue/white lights on the cars here in Raleigh are ridiculous. Get 2 or 3 of them on the side of the road at night and you can't see the road in front of you.

Well that explains everything.. 10 years of sitting behind a desk.. since the Air Farce doesn't do anything wrong 😛

Sorry but in the real world especially for troopers on the highway those lights are beacons and designed as such.

and as a ex LEO you should know at night you shouldn't even be directly looking at them anyway you should be looking ahead and changing a lane further away by law.

Whatever You say

I couldn't agree more on this topic, OutHouse.

I've thought this many times. It's totally beyond the realm of necessary.

It is absurd. They blast your eyeballs with so much high powered flashing light, I'd be shocked if this shit hasn't CAUSED accidents.

The other thing I hate are zeon or any sort of blue-tinted headlights... the ones that really drive a nail into your retina.

Cops used to make do with this:

*clap clap clap clap*

The uber-high intensity LED bars they use now are really bad. The blue especially.

There is a big fat line between being visible and being horribly blinding and a lot of these cop cars are well over that line.
