A man with special needs is speaking out after he was left badly bruised by police. Twenty-two-year-old Gilberto Powell, who has Down Syndrome, is left with horrible bruises and scars on his face after he had an encounter with police outside his home.

“That’s my son. That’s my baby. I really love this little boy. He’s my love,” said Powell’s mother, Josephine.

According to the family, they were inside their Southwest Miami-Dade home last Saturday when Powell, who is also called Liko, called his parents on his cell phone to let them know he was walking a block from his friend’s house.

On his way home, Liko said, “The police followed me.”

Liko said, the officer smacked him in the face with an open hand and knocked him to the ground.

“His whole hand,” he said.

According to the police report, a Miami-Dade Police officer noticed a bulge in Liko’s waistband. The officer attempted to conduct a pat down, and Powell tried to run away.

“I said, ‘Didn’t you know he was a Down Syndrome kid?’ And he said, ‘No, I’m not a doctor. I don’t know.’ And I said, ‘Well, you can see it in his face that he is a Down Syndrome kid,’” said Josephine.

MERKA.

I actually think he doesn't look as "downey" as the white ones I've seen, still you can easily tell though. You really ought to fix your police force 'murica.

I know a few police officers personally and for the most part they are good guys, so from my personal experience I tend to side with the police, however, shit like this and the cavity search from the other thread makes it harder and harder to not agree there is a major problem with our police force. Too many laws, too much power given is part of the problem.

As I posted in one of the other threads, with a lot of power should come a lot of responsibility. Hold officers to a higher standard. If they abuse their power and do things like this, they should not get a slap on the wrist, they should face serious jail time. That would solve a lot of this stuff.

With the number of cameras around, officers would know that what they do could be captured, and if they abuse their power they could end up in jail for a long time.

But that isnt being hard on crime 🙄

I'm really sick of cops. Tired of the "new age" type of cops who think they're bad asses and regular citizens need to RESPECT THEIR AUTHORITAH!

Police officers are regular citizens' employees. They are also slaves to the Constitution. Should any of them forget that, they need to be terminated immediately.

The problem is relatively easy to deal with. Require all police officers to wear cameras. Would quickly rein in the cowboy cops. Would also protect innocent cops from false accusations. Stats have shown the cameras work. Problem is governments don't seem too keen on spending money to protect civil liberties these days.

I'd go a step further and require other government security agents to wear these cameras as well, such as the TSA. As well as expanded use of non lethal weapons.

Which is why, despite countless cases and DOJ directives providing otherwise, cops are still consistently harassing people with cameras trying to film them perform their duties. If you really want to get pissed off, go to youtube, and look for videos on 'recording police' or 'filming police.'

A camera isn't biased. It's not there to take sides. It protects the police as much as it protects the people they interact with... so why are they so vehemently opposed to us filming them?

B/c they fuck up a lot. And because most don't know the laws they enforce.

MOney has nothing to do with it. they already have cameras in cars, and some have video recordings.

the POLICE UNION is the teh one fighting having cameras on the officers.

The same people telling us to fix our police force also don't want us owning guns or talking back to cops. So theres that. And the political system is off the rails with a majority voting base that just wants a bigger welfare check for themselves, everything else be damned.

Also I wager, like school shootings being used as a reason to ban guns because OMG its an epidemic happening on every street corner every 5 seconds, these incidents aren't as common as the instant national media at our fingertips makes them seem to be.

I believe there is a police dept in California that required cameras be worn at all times. Complaints against the dept dropped like 75%.

It's really sad.

They are given more privileges, but take less responsibility and accountability. It's really sick.

(Of course this is a generalization of the "bad apples," I would guess (hope?) that the vast majority of officers are good people. I've had personal/working relationships with many, many, police officers over the years and there were certainly more good than bad.)

Jeez....
"And he said, ‘No, I’m not a doctor. I don’t know.’ " Ummmm yeah...I call Bullshit on that defense. Those two pics from the link are pretty clear about that boy.

pretty much this.

until they want to protest something then they go have an unpermitted protest somewhere and cry when they get pepper sprayed 😛

Cameras on cops is not a magical solution. They require monitoring by OUTSIDE observers. Certain precincts have shown time and again they cannot be trusted to protect and serve.
