I'd honestly go for four colors if your brother would use them...but if he's adament on three, you have the advice needed above, it seems.

Also, if you have the $$, try throwing in a couple decks of plastic cards. They cost around $10-15 or so I believe, and are well worth it.

Edit: that was $10-15 for the pair, mind you.

What makes plastic cards better?

This might seem like a dumb answer. But when I play we have the same number or all 4 colors of chips. We use black.25, red.10, blue.05, white.01 (again feel free to multiply of make whatever values you like). Then if one person runs low of whites, they just cash in with another player with one of their other colors. This is usually for a winner take all texas hold em night but in theory it would work fine for any game.

Not sure how much you want to spend or if you mind eBay, but you can get some really nice sets on there for $60 - $120 depending on # of chips. They have sets with nice aluminum cases and padding inside. Great stuff. I've seen 2 sets bought off eBay and both were really good.

If you're not in a super hurry to get one of those sets... a guy I was playing with had one of those that he got for just over 50.

I'm curious? Why play 10 cents, 25 cents, dollar? We have poker nights, and you buy in at either a $5 table or a $20 table. (most of us are there for fun, so just buy in at the $5 table)
But, that doesn't mean that the chips have to add up to $5. We all start with $3000 worth of chips.

Probably more durable.
Full plastic, not plastic coated. Also probably cleanable, and less likely to tear.

Aquaman: Thanks for the link. At a quick glance, it looks like they've got some nice stuff. Getting a set that comes with a table top might be a nice thing to have even if it costs a little more. My mother was saying she wanted to try and find some poker or card-themed glassware (like, a set a four glasses with the card suits on them) but the only thing I've found like that so far was like $40. I think my brother would rather have a table top if the cost is the same. I guess I'll have to weigh the options and see what's better, since 5stardeal has that 10% off and I might be able to get a nicer set with that discount.

Whisper: I agree, I think a four-color set would probably be more futureproof, but he's told me that the chips they use most of the time now are from a four-color set and then use two of the colors to be the same value. If it were me, I think I'd want the four colors just to have a little more variety but since they're for my brother, I think it's probably best to go with what he's said that he would want. I guess he could always order some more down the road if he wanted, too. Plastic cards might be nice. I was planning on getting a dealer button as well since the set I was looking at doesn't come with one. Too bad I can't substitute the dealer button for the dice that he won't use. I've seen some nice WPT card sets, though. I bet he'd like those in addition to the casino cards that the set comes with. Unless he got a casino like Binion's or Bellagio or something.

Modeps: Not sure if you were asking me or not, but the chips I'm looking at 11.5g composite resin.

Has anyone found a way to get all the stuff that comes with the Poker Party Night set at pokerchipwholesale.com and customize the chips? As far as I can tell, they don't give you any way to choose the number of each color chip, etc. in the set. Too bad - it's really nice and I think that'd be a great thing to get for my brother.

There is such a place but I neglected to bookmark the site. they allow you to customize the number & colour of chips.

Ah, well, I went ahead and ordered the set I was looking at on 5stardeal. Got a dealer button since the set doesn't come with one. If I can find a table top for a decent price, that'd be great. pokerchipwholesale has one for $40 but it costs $23 to ship it. There has to be a store locally that sells that sort of stuff for less than $63. Any ideas as to what kind of stores I'd be wanting to look for to find something like that?

that's fine when you're playing winner take all, but if you're playing you take home whatever you get at the end of the night, it's easier to calculate if you have a set value at the end of the night for the chips
