So my brother's birthday is coming up and I want to get him some poker chips to use in his games with his friends. I found a good price on 500 chips and you can customize how many of each color, etc., you get. I tried to casually ask him what he would get if he was going to order 500 chips. He told me that they play with three colors, white ($.10), red ($.25), and green ($.50). He said he'd get 320 white, 144 red, and 36 green. He and his friends usually play about 7-handed, but they've played up to 10-handed he said. I didn't want to push him for too much information since it's technically supposed to be for his birthday. How does that setup sound to all you guys? I've just played online poker and have never really played with real chips, etc., and I want to make the order so they're exactly what he wants for his games. They usually play $10 buy-ins. Thanks for any input you all have.

For my $10 buy-in games, we do 12 white (25 cents each), 10 red (50 cents each) and 2 blue ($1 each). We generally have 10-14 people, at there's usually about $200 in play by the end of the night. Multiply accordingly.

Not sure how much you want to spend or if you mind eBay, but you can get some really nice sets on there for $60 - $120 depending on # of chips. They have sets with nice aluminum cases and padding inside. Great stuff. I've seen 2 sets bought off eBay and both were really good.

The ones I'm looking at are composite resin with an insert. My brother said they're almost identical to the chips that one of his friends has. The 500 chips come with an aluminum case, 2 decks of cards, and 5 dice that he won't use, but they come with the set. I even went so far as to show him the link and he said they were nice.

They sell for $84.99 and there's a 10% off running until July 31st. Shipping looks like it's about $13 so the 10% off will almost cover the shipping.

So you play with .50 blinds with a $10 buy in?

That's 50 chips each so 10 people can play with 500 chip set.

That looks like a good setup Aquaman. Problem is, and I guess I should have mentioned it, my brother's friend whose chips they use most of the time, has four colors of chips, white and blue, blue and white, red, and green, and they use the white/blue and blue/white as the same value. From what I can tell, they're not much for the big bets, etc., so I think I need to get more than half of the chips as the lowest value. This is hard... I want it to be done exactly right so he's happy with it.

That is the beauty of the system.......... you can call it

black $1
Green $0.25
White $0.10
Red $0.05

If ya add that all up.......... $10.00 :) It's scalable.

That's true. I might have to see what my brother thinks about that. I think they'd probably want to leave the low chip at $.10, so maybe something like $.10, $.20, $.50, and $2 would work. I don't think it's too often that they get pots bigger than $5 or $6. I think the biggest total they've had is just over $10. They're not a bunch of rich kids or anything; mostly just playing for fun. If I was better and not 3 years older than my brother, who's already a year older than most of his friends, I'd consider playing with them. I'm not so good, though, haha. To start playing with four chip values rather than the 3 that they're used to might be something my brother would have to ask his friends. It seems like it'd probably be better but who knows, they might be set in their ways? Do you have any suggestions for 3-value sets that could be used to cover $10 games ranging from 7-10 players? I think that's going to end up being the sweet spot: what can cover what they play now.

Newsflash, noone makes real clay chips anymore, the high quality "clay" chips you buy are just a specialized plastic, which makes marketing material very confusing. More info here.

I see that you changed that 35 to 25 in a lower post, but if they did leave it at 35 whites @ $.10, 10 greens @ $.25, and 5 blacks @ $.50, that's $10, too. That would be 350 white, 100 green, and 50 black, which isn't too far from the quick figure that my brother drew up of 320, 144, and 36. 350/100/50 seems like it's a better distribution for 10-handed games and if they're playing shorter than 10, there should be enough extras of each value to make change so people can have the number of each value that they want (one of his friends likes to have more of the top value chips, for example). I'll suggest 350/150/50 to my brother tomorrow and see what he thinks about that.

Thanks for all your suggestions, Aquaman.

I'd honestly go for four colors if your brother would use them...but if he's adament on three, you have the advice needed above, it seems.

Also, if you have the $$, try throwing in a couple decks of plastic cards. They cost around $10-15 or so I believe, and are well worth it.

Edit: that was $10-15 for the pair, mind you.
