Pokemon questions for 3ds/2ds (NOOB)

Can me and a friend battle over wifi?

Can we battle if one buys X and one buys Y version or do we need the same version?

Can you gift a pokemon or only trade?

For the first question, I think so. Not 100% positive but I don't see why it can't do ad-hoc multiplayer.

Second question, most definitely. That's the whole point of the game. X and Y are the same game but different rosters of Pokemon. You can battle and trade between the two versions. In fact you pretty much have to if you want to catch em' all.
