Poisen Ivy/Oak, how to get rid of it?

I hate this stuff. Gives me gnarly blisters that are 1/2" tall like a boil.

Is there anything one can do to remove it chemically without harming the beds it is in? Manually is fine if I can kill it and take the precautions but it is growing/choking a few trees. If I cut the vine base I assume it would just live off the tree and doesn't need a root in the soil?

usually, if it's gone up a tree, you can cut the vine and it will die. Cut it twice, and take a small (2") section out. It also helps to put some concentrated herbicide on the cut part to kill the roots.

..RoundUp blows it away. Read the instructions and mix a little soap with it. I use it on ivy/oak/ nearly anything else that's a nuisance.

Thanks. So just disconnect the vines from their roots. It's not bushing much but it's prolific and reaches 30 feet up. That doesn't seem too bad. I guess if I get it now when it's putting out leaves I can REALLY harm it. mmmmm....kill.

About RoundUp - I'm not putting that anywhere near my beds. It loves to kill and prevent ANYTHING from growing.

Or you could use the Roundup specifically made for Poison Ivy

..if you don't want to spray the RoundUp you can use an old paint brush and paint it on.

Just remember that even if it's dead, you can still get blisters and such from handling it. The oil in it is what people are allergic to. If you intend to pull the vines out once the plant is dead make sure to wear long sleeves and gloves. And whatever you do, don't burn the dead vines, poison ivy in the lungs is no picnic (the smoke will carry the oils).

Thanks for the help guys.

It's too much to hit the leaves with round-up as the vine is very high and in all honesty I've done too much to these beds to risk anything. I have some very valuable plants that cannot have difficulty (hundreds of stargazer lillies).

I'll see if cutting/pulling the roots can get it. Of course I'll be protecting my skin from the oil as well as putting the clothes immediately into the washer when I walk indoors.

I can handle anything nature throws at me. Poisen IVY however kicks my butt.
